Abstract
Masa transisi yang dialami oleh emerging adulthood ditandai dengan ketidakstabilan emosi yang dapat memicu psychological distress. Psychological distress dapat dipengaruhi oleh dua hal, yaitu keterpaparan terhadap kejadian traumatis di masa kecil dan ketidakmampuan individu dalam mengatasi stressor. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui peran adverse childhood experiences (ACE) dan coping strategies secara simultan dan parsial terhadap psychological distress. Penelitian ini melibatkan responden berjumlah 168 orang emerging adulthood dengan rentang usia 18-25 tahun. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu accidental sampling. Alat ukur yang digunakan antara lain WHO ACE-IQ, Brief COPE, dan Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis linear berganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peran simultan yang signifikan antara ACE dan coping strategies terhadap psychological distress, tidak terdapat peran ACE secara parsial yang signifikan terhadap psychological distress, tidak terdapat peran problem-focused coping secara parsial yang signifikan terhadap psychological distress, tidak terdapat peran emotion-focused coping secara parsial yang signifikan terhadap psychological distress, dan terdapat peran positif yang signifikan antara dysfunctional coping terhadap psychological distress secara parsial. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa pengalaman traumatis di masa lalu (ACE) yang disertai dengan kemampuan individu yang tepat dalam mengatasi stressor dapat mengatasi psychological distress, serta dysfunctional coping tidak disarankan untuk digunakan karena dapat meningkatkan psychological distress.
English Abstract
The life transition that happens in emerging adulthood and characterized by an unstable emotion of the pressure individuals received, can cause psychological distress. Psychological distress is influenced by two things, traumatic events occurred in childhood and a person's inability to cope with the stressor. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and coping strategies simultaneously and partially on psychological distress. Respondents of this study were 168 emerging adulthood which in the age range 18-25 years old. The sampling technique used an accidental sampling technique. The measuring instruments that were used are WHO ACE-IQ, Brief COPE, and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Data analysis used in this study is the multiple linear regression. The results of this research is that there is a significant simultan role between adverse childhood experiences and coping strategies on psychological distress, there is no significant partial role between ACE and psychological distress, there is no significant partial role between problem-focused coping and psychological distress, there is no significant partial role between emotion-focused coping and psychological distress, and there is a positive significant role between dysfunctional coping and psychological distress partially. Implications of this study is that traumatic life events (ACE) and together with an individual's ability to cope correctly with stressors, can be a strategy to deal with psychological distress, and it is not recommended to use dysfunctional coping because it can increase psychological distress.
