Abstract

English Abstract

A research was carried out from August to October of 2006 at Beef Cattle Research Station in Grati, Pasuruan, for in-vivo experiment and proximate analysis, whilst VFA analysis was done in Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. The objective of research was to determine the effect of ration differing in protein concentration on VFA of rumen liquid of weaned male Bali Cattle, and to find out the optimum protein concentration in the ration . Materials used in this research included twenty weaned male Bali Cattle aging of 7 to 9 months and initial weight about 53 to 114 kgs. Treatment feed involved elephant grass and concentrate in the ratio 20% : 80%. Protein ration as the following: R| = feed with protein concentration of 9.5%; R2 = feed with protein concentration of 13.0%, R3 = feed with protein concentration of 16.5%, and R4 = feed with protein concentration of 20.0%. The experiment was arranged in a Blocked Randomised Design. The variables measured were VFA concentrations (acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid). Results of research indicated that treatment did not affect significantly (P>0.05) VFA production. The average acetic, propionic and butyric acids production as follow: 32.11 mM/1 (63.61 %), 11.98 mM/1 (23.73 %), and 6.39 mM/1 (12.66 %). Ratio of C2/C3 in each treatment attained 2.93 (Ri ); 2.73 (R2); 2.62 (R3); and 2.73 (R4). Production of CH4 of each treatment were 33.27 M (R|); 32.27 M (R2); 31.77 M (R3); and 32.22 M (R4). Production CO2 of each treatment were 57.24 M (Ri ); 56.96 M (R2); 56.27 M (R3); and 57.20 M (R4). Rumen liquid aspirated at different times significantly affected (P<0.01 ) values of VFA production. It can be concluded that R3 ration was the best among the others shown by lower values of C2/C3 ratio, CH4 and CO2 productions. VFA productions increased following the increased in rumen liquid collecting times. It is suggested that a comprehensive evaluation is needed for future studies by implementing ration containing 14-20% crude protein.
