Abstract

Cerita The Pearl sangat simpel tetapi menarik. Menceritakan tentang nelayan Indian dari Mexico bernama Kino. Dia menemukan mutiara yang begitu berharga untuk merawat anaknya bernama coyotito dari sengatan kalajengking. Dia menemukan mutiara yang begitu berharga yang mana akan merubah hidupnya, tetapi itu semua tidak seperti yang ia harapkan. Putranya meninggal karena di tembak oleh salah satu pemburu. Pada akhirnya mutiara tersebut di baung kembali ke laut. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori struktural untuk membandingkan dua karya tersebut. Jadi, disini novel The Pearl dan film The Pearl karya John Steinbeck’s akan di bandingkan dan fokus pada alur, peran, dan lokasi kejadian. Peneliti ingin mengetahui perbedaan dan persamaan antara novel dan film dengan menganalisis unsur instrinsik juga faktor eksternal. Penelitian ini menemukan perbedaan dan persamaan antara novel dan film The Pearl karya John Steinbeck. Dua karya tersebut memiliki persamaan tentang masa kecil dan budaya orang Indian. Perbedaan antara dua karya tersebut terletak di awal cerita dan akhir cerita. Cerita di film di awali dengan masa muda Kino, sedangkan di novel dia sebagai orang dewasa. Pada Akhir cerita di film Coyotito tetap hidup. Tetapi di novel, Coyotito meninggal karena tertembak oleh pemburu. Akhirnya Kino membuang mutiara itu kembali ke laut. Untuk peneliti selanjutnya dengan objek yang sama. Penulis menyarankan untuk menggunakan teori lain. Peneliti selanjutnya dapat menganalisi bahasa atau pokok permasalahan menggunakan teori kapitalis.

English Abstract

yet interesting. It tells about a Mexican Indian pearl diver Kino. He found a great pearl to cure his son Coyotito from scorpion’s stung. He found a valuable pearl which changed his life, but it was not in the way he expected. This novel has been adapted into a novel. Here the Pearl novel and The Pearl movie version by John Steinbeck’s were compared focused on plot, character and setting using structural approach by Chatman. This study found differences and similarities between the novel and the movie The Pearl by John Steinbeck. The two works have some similarities that namely the potrayal of childhood in Indian Culture both in two work. Differences between the two works lie in the beginning and the end of the story. In the beginning of the movie, it is started by the emergence of Kino as a young boy while in the novel, he is already as a man. In the end of the movie story, Coyotito does not die. But in the novel, Coyotito dies because he is shot by the trackers. For the next researchers who want to analyze the same object, the writer suggests them to analyze using capitalism or sociological theory in further analysis.
