Abstract

Reddit adalah media sosial berbasis forum yang memungkinkan pengguna untuk berdiskusi dan berinteraksi secara online melalui posting, komentar, dan voting. Semua aktivitas diskusi di Reddit terjadi dalam subreddit yang merupakan komunitas yang berfokus pada topik tertentu. Meski Reddit menawarkan berbagai komunitas yang beragam, situs ini telah diblokir di Indonesia oleh pemerintah sejak sekitar tahun 2014. Pemblokiran ini memaksa pengguna Reddit di Indonesia untuk memanfaatkan Virtual Private Network (VPN) atau mengubah pengaturan Domain Name System (DNS) agar dapat mengakses Reddit. Walau adanya pemblokiran, jumlah pengguna Reddit di Indonesia meningkat secara signifikan sejak tahun lalu. Penelitian kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor yang memotivasi penggunaan Reddit di Indonesia dan persepsi pengguna terhadap pemblokirannya. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur kepada sembilan narasumber dan dianalisis menggunakan metode thematic analysis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa narasumber memiliki keragaman karakteristik dan perilaku dalam menggunakan Reddit. Beberapa kesamaan yang ditemukan adalah kecenderungan untuk mencari informasi dan pengetahuan sesuai profesi mereka, serta preferensi konten pada beberapa topik tertentu. Dengan menggunakan uses and gratifications theory, ditemukan bahwa faktor-faktor motivasi penggunaan Reddit meliputi information seeking, entertainment, dan socializing, sementara faktor status seeking tidak terpenuhi. Terdapat tema baru yang ditemukan pada penelitian yaitu platform advantages. Terkait persepsi pengguna terhadap pemblokiran Reddit, ditemukan tiga jenis sikap beserta alasannya yaitu setuju, netral, dan tidak setuju.

English Abstract

Reddit, a forum-based social media platform, facilitates user interactions through posts, comments, and voting within various subreddits, which are specialized communities focused on specific topics. Despite the extensive range of communities available on Reddit, the platform has been blocked in Indonesia by the government since approximately 2014. This restriction necessitates that Indonesian Reddit users employ Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or alter Domain Name System (DNS) settings to access the site. Notwithstanding this blockade, the number of Reddit users in Indonesia has notably increased over the past year. This study aims to investigate the factors motivating the use of Reddit in Indonesia and the users’ perceptions of its blockage. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with nine participants and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the participants exhibit diverse characteristics and behaviors in their use of Reddit. Common tendencies include seeking information and knowledge pertinent to their professions and a preference for content on specific topics. Employing the uses and gratifications theory, the study identified that the motivating factors for using Reddit encompass information seeking, entertainment, and socializing, while the factor of status seeking was not evident. An additional theme, platform advantages, emerged from the analysis. Regarding users’ perceptions of the Reddit blockade, three distinct attitudes were identified, each with its own rationale, namely agreement, neutrality, and disagreement.
