Abstract
Aktivitas mahasiswi merokok sangat lekat dengan stigma negatif di masyarakat, mahasiswi yang masih belum independen secara finansial dan kerap kali mendapat label sebagai “perempuan nakal” ketika merokok. Pergaulan, lingkungan, dan kebutuhan akan gaya hidup modern menjadi salah satu penyebab meningkatnya aktivitas merokok bagi mahasiswi. Saat ini merokok bukan hanya sekedar aktivitas untuk melepas penat tapi juga melahirkan makna tertentu ketika mahasiswi perokok berinteraksi dengan sesama. Makna yang lahir dapat berbeda di setiap individu dan kelompok tergantung bagaimana pandangan, perasaan, maupun gagasan yang dituangkan oleh kelompok tertentu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menggali makna yang terbentuk dari aktivitas merokok sebagai simbol interaksi mahasiswi perokok di Universitas Brawijaya. Penelitian ini berjenis kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data wawancara mendalam yang melibatkan delapan mahasiswi perokok aktif dan tergabung dalam kelompok pertemanan. Mengacu pada teori interaksionisme simbolik, makna berarti pesan yang ditukarkan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa mayoritas mahasiswi memiliki motif yang berbeda untuk mulai merokok, motif individu merokok berkaitan dengan bagaimana setiap individu memaknai aktivitas merokok sebagai simbol bersama rekan pertemanannya. Setiap kelompok pertemanan saling bertukar makna ketika menggunakan rokok sebagai simbol interaksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa mahasiswi menggunakan aktivitas merokok sebagai simbol ketika berinteraksi bersama rekan, melahirkan makna merokok sebagai terapi mental, lifestyle, dan simbol kebersamaan dalam kelompok.
English Abstract
The activity of female students smoking is closely associated with negative stigma in society, students who are still not financially independent and often get labeled as "bad women" when they smoke. Relationships, the environment, and the need for a modern lifestyle are some of the causes of increased smoking among female students. Nowadays smoking is not just an activity to relieve fatigue but also creates a certain meaning when smoking students interact with each other. The meaning that emerges can be different for each individual and group depending on the views, feelings and ideas expressed by a particular group. The aim of this research is to explore the meaning formed from smoking activities as a symbol of interaction between smoking students at Brawijaya University. This research is a descriptive qualitative type with in-depth interview data collection techniques involving eight female students who are active smokers and are members of friendship groups. Referring to the theory of symbolic interactionism, meaning means the message exchanged. This research found that the majority of female students have different motives for starting smoking. Individual motives for smoking are related to how each individual interprets the activity of smoking as a symbol of being with their friends. Each friendship group exchanges meaning when using cigarettes as a symbol of interaction. The research results show that female students use smoking as a symbol when interacting with colleagues, giving rise to the meaning of smoking as mental therapy, lifestyle, and a symbol of togetherness in the group.
