This research uses qualitative descriptive approach with document analysis method. The data is taken from the mp3boo.com and Plyrics.com. The research data is derived from 5 songs selected from the Neighborhoods album that most contain connotative meaning. This study employed the theory from Chaer (2007) in learning about connotative meaning and classification types of connotative meaning. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, Urban Dictionary and Phrasal Verbs from McGraw-Hills's are used to discover the literal meaning and connotative meaning. Of the 33 data that found in the 6 selected songs, the researcher found 11 positive connotations, 16 negative connotations and 6 neutral connotation. The results of this study leads to the conclusion that connotative meaning always involves a response that contains the emotional value of the reader. To understand connotative meaning, understanding context is crucial because the context will determine the right meaning of a phrase or word that is intended. The researcher suggests the next researchers conduct a research in semantics field by using different object of the study such as Indonesian folk songs. Also, different theory may be used as well in order to get more understanding about connotative meaning. They can also use different data sources or use more than one approach to produce more detailed research.
