Abstract

Penelitian ini berangkat dari ketertarikan terhadap dunia cosplay dan bagaimana individu�individu dalam komunitas ini menegosiasikan identitas mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori hibriditas identitas dari Stuart Hall untuk memahami bagaimana cosplayer menggabungkan identitas pribadi mereka dengan karakter yang mereka perankan. Selain itu, teori performativitas gender digunakan untuk menganalisis bagaimana cosplayer menggunakan kostum dan penampilan untuk mengekspresikan identitas mereka. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Kota Malang dengan fokus pada komunitas Cosuki, komunitas cosplay terbesar di kota ini. Melalui observasi lapangan, wawancara semistruktur, dan partisipasi dalam berbagai kegiatan komunitas, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa cosplayer mengalami proses negosiasi identitas yang kompleks. Mereka mengadopsi elemen-elemen dari karakter yang mereka perankan, yang sering kali berbeda jauh dari identitas sehari-hari mereka, dan menciptakan identitas hibrida yang dinamis. Selain itu, cosplayer juga menghadapistereotip dan stigma dari masyarakat yang kurang memahami kegiatan mereka. Stigma ini menciptakan tekanan sosial dan psikologis, namun komunitas Cosuki menyediakan ruang bagi cosplayer untuk mengekspresikan diri dan mendukung satu sama lain. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan tentang bagaimana cosplayer mengelola identitas mereka dan menunjukkan bahwa cosplay adalah lebih dari sekadar hobi; ini adalah bentuk ekspresi diri yang kompleks dan kreatif. English Abstract

This research stems from an interest in the world of cosplay and how individuals within this community negotiate their identities. It employs Stuart Hall's theory of identity hybridity to understand how cosplayers combine their personal identities with the characters they portray. Additionally, gender performativity theory is used to analyze how cosplayers use costumes and appearances to express their identities. The research was conducted in Malang City, focusing on the Cosuki community, the largest cosplay community in the city. Through field observations, semi-structured interviews, and participation in various community activities, this research found that cosplayers undergo a complex process of identity negotiation. They adopt elements from the characters they portray, which often differ significantly from their everyday identities, creating a dynamic hybrid identity. Moreover, cosplayers face stereotypes and stigma from a society that does not fully understand their activities. This stigma creates social and psychological pressures, but the Cosuki community provides a space for cosplayers to express themselves and support one another. This research provides insights into how cosplayers manage their identities and demonstrates that cosplay is more than just a hobby; it is a complex and creative form of self-expression. It also highlights the importance of community in supporting individual identity and expression
