Abstract

Kefasihan membaca adalah seperangkat keterampilan yang mengacu pada kecepatan, akurasi, dan kemudahan membaca lisan siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan sebagai tanggapan atas fakta bahwa masih ada perdebatan mengenai kesenjangan gender dalam membaca terutama di bidang bahasa Inggris. Mahasiswa MTS dipilih sebagai peserta penelitian ini karena ada pernyataan bahwa mahasiswa MTS lebih kesulitan berbahasa Inggris karena hampir setengah dari materi mereka menggunakan bahasa Arab. Dalam penelitian ini, WCPM dan indikator akurasi digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan kefasihan membaca lisan siswa. Siswa laki-laki dan perempuan dinilai secara terpisah untuk mendapatkan perbedaan prestasi di antara mereka dan yang signifikan antara gender dan kefasihan membaca lisan. Penelitian ini merupakan korelasi kuantitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan tes kefasihan membaca lisan yang diambil dari sampel soal TOEFL Junior Sample sebagai instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data. Sebanyak dua kelas siswa MTsN 1 Mojokerto berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan SPSS 25.0. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada hubungan antara kelancaran membaca lisan di EFL yang diukur dalam WCPM dan pencapaian akurasi tetapi tidak ada, hubungan antara perbedaan gender dengan kelancaran membaca melalui WCPM dan akurasi; hanya ada perbedaan skor dari WCPM di mana wanita memiliki skor lebih baik daripada pria.

English Abstract

Reading fluency is a set of skills that refer to a student’s speed, accuracy, and ease of oral reading. This study was conducted in response to the fact that there is still a debate regarding the gender gap in reading, especially in English field. MTS students were chosen as the participants of this research since there was a statement that MTS students are more struggling in English because almost half of their materials are using Arabic. In this study, WCPM and accuracy indicator was used to measure the students’ oral reading fluency skill. Men and women students were assessed separately to get the difference achievement between them and the significance between gender and oral reading fluency. This research was a quantitative correlation. The study used an oral reading fluency test by using the TOEFL Junior Sample as instruments to collect data. A total of students from two classes of MTsN 1 Mojokerto participated in this study. The collected data is analyzed using SPSS 25.0. The study revealed that there was a relationship between oral reading fluency in EFL as measured in WCPM and accuracy achievement but there was no relationship between gender differences with reading fluency through WCPM and accuracy; there were only differences in score from WCPM where women had better scores than men.
