Abstract
Pada masa kolonial, penjajah memanfaatkan kekuasaan mereka dalam berinteraksi dengan penduduk pribumi. Hal ini memicu munculnya pandangan kolonialisme yang menganggap pribumi sebagai inferior. Penelitian ini menganalisis pandangan kolonialisme terhadap pribumi dalam novel The People in the Trees (2013) karya Hanya Yanagihara. Menggunakan pendekatan poskolonial dan teori Orientalisme Edward Said, studi ini berfokus pada bagaimana karakter Norton Perina dan Paul Tallent mewakili pandangan kolonial orang-orang Barat. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pandangan kolonialisme dimanifestasikan oleh kedua karakter melalui produksi pengetahuan kolonial, othering, dan ketidakseimbangan kekuasaan. Selain itu, studi ini juga mengungkap bahwa pandangan kolonial menyebabkan eksploitasi dan dehumanisasi masyarakat pribumi. Meskipun terdapat perbedaan dalam perwujudan pandangan kolonial, baik Norton Perina maupun Paul Tallent turut berkontribusi dalam dampak negatifnya terhadap masyarakat pribumi.
English Abstract
In the colonial era, colonizers used power in their interactions with the colonized peoples. It results in the reinforcement of ‘colonial gaze’, which refers to the perception of indigenous peoples as inferior. This study explores the portrayal of the colonial gaze towards the indigenous people in Hanya Yanagihara’s The People in the Trees (2013). Using a postcolonial approach and Edward Said’s Orientalism theory to analyze the novel, the study focuses on how the characters Norton Perina and Paul Tallent represent the Western colonial gaze. The findings indicate that the characters’ colonial gaze manifests through knowledge production, othering, and power imbalances. Moreover, the study reveals that colonial gaze results in the exploitation and dehumanization of indigenous people. In addition, despite differing portrayals of the colonial gaze, both Norton Perina and Paul Tallent contribute to its negative effects on indigenous society
