Abstract
Dalam pengajaran menyimak di kelas EFL khususnya di tingkat sekolah menengah atas, para guru menghadapi beberapa masalah. Hal ini karena ada beberapa tantangan dalam mengajarkan keterampilan menyimak. Podcast dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu media kegiatan menyimak siswa. Terbukti kegiatan menyimak menggunakan podcast membuat siswa antusias dalam menyimak. Penelitian ini menyelidiki persepsi siswa dalam penggunaan podcast dalam aktivitas menyimak mereka. Peneliti ingin menggali lebih dalam penerapan podcast sebagai media kegiatan menyimak siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mixedmethod) berupa desain sekuensial eksplanatori, dengan instrumen kuesioner dan daftar pertanyaan. Kegiatan menyimak yang dilakukan siswa di luar kelas selama total satu bulan dengan menggunakan media podcast dan ditindaklanjuti dengan mengisi log pendengaran dan kuesioner serta melakukan wawancara. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah 34 siswa kelas X di salah satu SMA terbaik di Malang Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada awal kegiatan menyimak, siswa masih kebingungan karena ada beberapa kosakata yang belum mereka ketahui sebelumnya. Satu bulan setelahnya, para siswa merasakan perbedaan dalam keterampilan menyimak serta pengetahuan kosa kata mereka. Oleh karena itu, persepsi siswa dalam penggunaan podcast sebagai media dalam kegiatan menyimak adalah siswa mempunyai sikap yang baik atau positif terhadapnya, karena podcast menginspirasi mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, sehingga mereka suka menggunakan podcast sebagai media pendukungnya dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Podcast juga menarik minat mereka untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, serta membantu siswa memperoleh pengetahuan baru dan memperluas pengetahuan mereka. Podcast juga dapat membantu siswa untuk memperkaya kosa kata mereka, dan meningkatkan keterampilan pengucapan mereka.
English Abstract
In teaching listening in the EFL classroom especially at the high school level, the teachers face some problems. This is because there are some challenges in teaching listening skills. Podcasts can be used as one of the media for the students’ listening activities. It is proved that listening activities using podcasts makes the students enthusiast in listening. This research investigated the students’ perceptions in the use of podcasts in their listening activities. The researcher want to dig deeper into the implementation of podcasts as a media for students listening activities. This research used the mixed-method in the form of explanatory sequential design, with questionnaire and list of questions as the instrument. Listening activity done by the students outside the classroom for a total one month by using podcasts as the media and followed up by fill the listening log and questionnaire also doing the interview. The participants of this research were 34 students of the tenth-grade in one of the best high school in Malang. The result showed that at the beginning of the listening activities, the students are still confused because there are several vocabulary that they do not know before. One month after, the students felt the difference in their listening skills as well as their vocabulary knowledge. Therefore, the students’ perception in the use of podcasts as a media in their listening activities is the students have a good or positive attitude towards it, because podcasts inspired them in learning English, so that they like to use podcasts as their supporting media in listening. Podcasts also engaged their interest in learning English, as well as help the students gain new knowledge and broaden their knowledge. Podcasts can also help students to enrich their vocabulary, and improve their pronunciation skills.
