Abstract
Penelitian ini berfokus pada pemecahan sebuah pertanyaan besar tentang bagaimana pekerja sampah bisa bertahan hidup di tengah besarnya tekanan ekonomi dan lingkungan. Seperti yang terjadi pada pekerja sampah di TPS Dinoyo, Kota Malang, yang sehari-hari harus bertahan hidup di antara himpitan tekanan ekonomi atas kebutuhan sehari-hari, dan tekanan lingkungan yang mencakup kondisi tempat kerja yang penuh dengan sampah tanpa adanya alat pelindung yang kompleks. Namun, mereka tetap pada posisinya, menjadi pekerja sampah. Riset ini kemudian mencoba untuk menjawabnya dari sisi sampah, di mana sampah merupakan material yang selalu terlibat dengan pekerja sampah setiap hari. Untuk bisa memperoleh data, penelitian ini menggunakan metode etnografi yang di dalamnya melibatkan banyak proses, seperti observasi partisipasi, catatan lapangan, wawancara mendalam, serta dokumentasi. Menggunakan teori sampah serta penelusuran soal pemilahan sampah, hasil penelitian ini kemudian menunjukkan bahwa ada keterlibatan yang penting dari sampah untuk bisa mendukung daya bertahan hidup pekerja sampah. Hidup bersama sampah sehari-hari kemudian menjadi alasan mengapa pekerja sampah masih terus berada dalam perannya walaupun tekanan hidup menerpa. Cara pekerja sampah bertahan hidup ini dijawab oleh keberadaan sampah.
English Abstract
This research focuses on addressing a major question about how waste workers manage to survive under significant economic and environmental pressures. For example, the waste workers at the Dinoyo Temporary Waste Disposal Site (TPS) in Malang City have to cope daily with economic pressures to meet their basic needs and environmental challenges, including working in a waste-filled environment without advanced protective gear. Despite these challenges, they continue to work as waste workers. This study explores this question from the perspective of waste itself, a material that waste workers interact with every day. To collect data, this research employs ethnographic methods, including participant observation, field notes, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Utilizing waste theory and examining the process of waste sorting, the findings reveal that waste plays a crucial role in supporting the survival of waste workers. Living with waste everyday becomes the reason why waste workers continue in their roles despite life's pressures. The way waste workers survive is answered by the existence of waste.
