English Abstract

This study attempts to analyze some of the connotative meanings found in the lyrics of six songs, namely, Who Says, Flowers, Scars to Your Beautiful, Dear Future Husband, Made You Look, and All About that Bass. By using (Leech's, 1981) theory of connotative meaning, this research only focuses on analyzing the connotative meaning found in song lyrics; the message conveyed by the connotative meaning and the contribution of the connotative meaning to the message conveyed. In addition, the researcher will also associate song lyrics with women representatives in general. By using a qualitative approach, the data in this study were taken from several words and several phrases that contain connotative meanings. The researcher collected data by listening to the song on Spotify and reading the song lyrics thoroughly to find the data, and making a list of words and several phrases that contain the connotative meaning of the lyrics of each song. Then data analysis was carried out by identifying the connotative meanings contained in several phrases in the song lyrics based on Leech's theory, coding the data, understanding the messages contained, connecting the connotations found with messages - linking songs with some representational values of woman - and finally is to draw conclusions. After analyzing the data, the researcher found 27 expressions that contain connotative meanings. The most values of representation woman in these songs are self-love, independent, and also self-acceptance.
