Abstract
English Abstract
The current research identifies the level of digital literacy skills and foreign language anxiety experienced by Gen Z in Malang. Additionally, it also analyzes the correlation of those variables and how Gen Z perceive their digital literacy skills and foreign language anxiety. This research applied the explanatory sequential design as one of the mixed-method types. 100 Gen Z in Malang ranging from 15 to 29 years old (born 1995 to 2009) was involved as the sample by occupying stratified random sampling technique. Two questionnaires were disseminated to obtain the data which were a digital literacy skills questionnaire and a foreign language anxiety questionnaire as well as the semi-structured interview. Descriptive statistics analysis was applied to unveil the first and second problems of the study and Pearson Correlation test to reveal the third problem of the study as well as to test the hypothesis. Meanwhile, coding analysis was applied to the interview result to answer the fourth problem of the study while reidentifying the quantitative data obtained. The results show that Gen Z in Malang has high digital literacy skills. This suggests that they are competent in operating the digital technologies, become creative, collaborate with others, communicate effectively, find and select information, think critically, understand social and culture, and maintain e-safety while exploring digital media which provide much information in foreign languages. Meanwhile, they also have moderate level of foreign language anxiety, which means that Gen Z in Malang are anxious in communicating with others using foreign languages and are afraid of negative evaluation. The Pearson Correlation result indicates that there is weak correlation of digital literacy skills and foreign language anxiety on Gen Z aged 25 to 29 years old. Gen Z in Malang perceive that digital technology is easy to use and useful in several situations. The results of this research also found that Gen Z's digital technology use behavior is using digital technology to access social media instead of foreign language learning platforms
