Abstract
Pandemi COVID-19 yang mendunia telah mempengaruhi peralihan sistem pendidikan dari lingkungan pembelajaran offline ke online. Karena sifat pengajaran dan pembelajaran online, siswa juga diharapkan untuk mengikuti kelas online. Terdapat banyak platform untuk menyelenggarakan kelas online, salah satunya adalah video conference. Mengingat proses pembelajaran memegang peranan penting dalam menentukan seberapa baik siswa memahami materi yang diajarkan. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan video konferensi di kelas bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan wawancara untuk mengumpulkan data. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara terhadap 3 mahasiswa Universitas Brawijaya jurusan Program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dan dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik. Peserta diberikan pertanyaan melalui Whatsapp, peneliti menulis jawabannya di komputer, kemudian peneliti mengklarifikasi pernyataan tertulis tersebut kepada peserta, dan peneliti menemukan tema jawabannya. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki persepsi yang bervariasi terhadap penggunaan video konferensi dalam kelas bahasa Inggris online selama pandemi COVID-19. Keuntungannya adalah merasa lebih percaya diri, hemat biaya, fleksibel, dan meningkatkan motivasi. Selain itu video conference juga mempunyai kelemahan, yaitu terkait masalah teknis, keterbatasan perangkat, kurangnya interaksi, kurang fokus, dan rasa bosan. Studi ini memberikan wawasan mendalam tentang bagaimana faktor-faktor tersebut mempengaruhi proses belajar siswa.
English Abstract
The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic had affected the shift of the educational system from offline to online learning environments. Due to the online nature of teaching and learning, students might complete online classes. There are lots of tools to operate online classes, one of which is the video conference. Taking into account that the learning process plays a significant role in determining how well the students comprehend the materials being taught. This research is intended to determine students’ perceptions on the use of video conference in English class. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. In this study, the researcher used interview to collect the data. Data collection was carried out by having interview with 3 students in Universitas Brawijaya majoring in English Education Program and analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants were asked the questions through Whatsapp, the researcher write the answers in the computer, then the researcher clarify the written statements to the participants, and the researcher found the theme of the answers. The result showed that students had a varied perception toward the use of video conference in the English online classes during COVID-19 pandemic. The advantages are feel more confident, cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and increased motivation. Besides, video conference also provides disadvantages, those are related to technical issue, limitation of device, lack of interaction, less focus, and boredom. This study provides in-depth insights into how these factors affected students’ learning process.
