Abstract

Speaking anxiety is still an issue that is often faced by students in EFL class. Most students in class are more active when writing and listening to English than when students are asked to speak English. This research emphasizes on factors that causes of students' speaking anxiety and also find out what strategies students use to reduce their anxiety. This research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing observation and personal interview. The participant of this research are 4 students for eleventh grade from SMAN 6 Malang. The interviews were conducted online using WhatsApp video call by asking 8 questions.

English Abstract

Speaking anxiety is still an issue that is often faced by students in EFL class. Most students in class are more active when writing and listening to English than when students are asked to speak English. This research emphasizes on factors that causes of students' speaking anxiety and also find out what strategies students use to reduce their anxiety. This research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing observation and personal interview. The participant of this research are 4 students for eleventh grade from SMAN 6 Malang. The interviews were conducted online using WhatsApp video call by asking 8 questions. The results of the research showed in two factors that is internal factors and external factors. From internal factors namely nervousness, lack of self-confidence, fear of making mistakes. From external factors; friends/classmates, lack of vocabulary. From the interview the researcher also found some strategies that students used to reduce their anxiety; relaxation, preparation, and positive thinking. The implication of the research on teaching is that the teachers are expected to help students deal with anxiety when speaking. It can be seen from several factors that cause anxiety such as; nervousness, lack of confidence, afraid of making mistakes, friends/classmates, and lack of vocabulary. Teachers can overcome it by trying to understand the abilities of each student and giving students time to prepare themselves before speaking class starts. The researcher expected this research has an impact in the future and can reduce the speaking anxiety in students
