Abstract
Inses konsensual ditandai dengan adanya rasa suka sama suka dan saling percaya di antara pihak-pihak yang terlibat, membedakannya dari hubungan yang dipaksakan. Karya sastra merupakan salah satu media untuk merepresentasikan hubungan inses konsensual yang dapat memberikan pendekatan baru terhadap hubungan insens konsensual. Salah satu contohnya adalah novel Forbidden (2010) karya Tabitha Suzuma. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan teori representasi dari Stuart Hall untuk melihat bagaimana novel Forbidden merepresentasikan hubungan inses konsensual dan menyampaikan pesan tersebut melalui proses encoding dan decoding, bagian dari teori representasi. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa novel Forbidden menggunakan tahapan-tahapan encoding untuk memahai strategi penyampaian pesannya: produksi, kerangka pengetahuan, relasi produksi, dan infrastructure teknis. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini menyelidiki bagaimana pembaca menerjemahkan pesan dari representasi tersebut melalui posisi dominanhegemonik, negosiasi, dan oposisi, yang mengungkapkan interpretasi yang beragam. Dengan elemen-elemen ini, Forbidden menyajikan inses konsesual sebagai subjek tabu yang dapat dipahami berdasarkan factor kontesktual, mendorong pembaca untuk terlibat secara kritis dengan penggambarannya. Pada akhirnya, novel ini memiliki kemampuan untuk menghilangkan prasangka dan menstimulasi wacana tentang isu-isu sosial dan moral yang kompleks terkait hubungan inses yang bersifat konsensual.
English Abstract
Consensual incest is indicated by mutual consent and trust between the involved parties; distinguishes itself from coerced relationships. Literary works are one of the mediums to portray consensual incestuous relationships, providing a new approach to consensual incestuous relationships. One such example is Forbidden (2010), a novel by Tabitha Suzuma. This qualitative study deploys Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to discern how Forbidden novel represents consensual incestuous relationships and conveys messages about consensual incest through the process of encoding and decoding within the representation theory. This study reveals that Forbidden novel incorporates stages of encoding to understand its messaging strategies: production, frameworks of knowledge, relations of production, and technical infrastructure. Furthermore, this study investigates how readers decode these representations via dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional positions, revealing varied interpretations. With these elements, Forbidden presents consensual incest as an understandable taboo subject by contextual factors, prompting readers to engage critically with its portrayal. Ultimately, the novel has the ability to dispel preconceptions and stimulate discourse on complex social and moral issues related to consensual incestuous relationships
