Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami representasi korupsi dalam media massa melalui analisis semiotik pada sampul majalah Tempo yang menggambarkan harta karun pejabat pajak. Dengan menggunakan teori order of signification Roland Barthes dan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian ini menganalisis makna denotatif, konotatif, dan mitos yang terkandung dalam elemen-elemen visual pada sampul majalah tersebut. Pada tingkat denotatif, sampul majalah menampilkan berbagai elemen visual seperti bangunan tiga lantai, suami istri dengan gaya sederhana, dan kendaraan mewah di halaman rumah, yang secara literal menggambarkan kehidupan seorang pejabat publik dan keluarganya. Pada tingkat konotatif, elemenelemen ini menyiratkan ketidaktransparanan dan penyalahgunaan kekuasaan, menggambarkan kehidupan ganda yang sering dijalani oleh pejabat korup. Pada tingkat mitos, sampul majalah menguatkan beberapa keyakinan sosial mengenai korupsi, seperti mitos pejabat publik yang korup dan kaya dengan gaya hidup mewah namun tersembunyi, keterlibatan keluarga dalam korupsi, dan dampak korupsi terhadap kualitas moral anggota keluarga. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa representasi visual pada sampul majalah memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk persepsi publik tentang korupsi, memperkuat stereotip, dan narasi sosial yang ada. Implikasi dari temuan ini menekankan pentingnya kritis terhadap representasi media dan pemahaman peran media dalam membentuk narasi sosial tentang korupsi. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi bagi kajian semiotika dan studi tentang representasi korupsi dalam media massa, serta menawarkan beberapa saran bagi penelitian selanjutnya untuk memperluas cakupan analisis dan metode yang digunakan.
English Abstract
This study aims to understand the representation of corruption in mass media through a semiotic analysis of Tempo magazine's cover depicting the treasure of tax official. Using Roland Barthes' order of signification theory and descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyzes the denotative, connotative, and myth meanings embedded in the visual elements of the magazine cover. At the denotative level, the cover features various visual elements such as a three-story building, a modestly dressed couple, and luxury vehicles in the front yard, literally portraying the life of a public official and his family. At the connotative level, these elements imply opacity and abuse of power, depicting the double life often led by corrupt officials. At the myth level, the magazine cover reinforces several social beliefs about corruption, such as the myth of corrupt and wealthy public officials leading a hidden luxurious lifestyle, the involvement of family members in corruption, and the impact of corruption on the moral quality of family members. This study reveals that visual representation on the magazine cover plays a crucial role in shaping public perception of corruption, reinforcing existing stereotypes and social narratives. The implications of these findings emphasize the importance of critical engagement with media representations and understanding the role of media in shaping social narratives about corruption. This research contributes to semiotic studies and the study of corruption representation in mass media, offering several suggestions for future research to broaden the scope of analysis and methodologies used.
