Abstract

Keterampilan menulis merupakan salah satu keterampilan penting di antara keterampilan menyimak, membaca, dan berbicara, dan sangat penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Merangsang antusiasme siswa untuk menulis dapat dicapai melalui penggunaan alat bantu mengajar visual seperti gambar. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini menyelidiki persepsi siswa dan seorang guru tentang penggunaan seri gambar dalam penulisan teks recount di SMK Cor Jesu, Malang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendegar pendapat siswa dan guru tentang implementasi gambar berseri di dalam kelas. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan wawancara dengan 22 siswa dan satu guru bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus dengan dua instrumen yaitu lembar observasi yang meliputi tiga dimensi yaitu keterlibatan, pemahaman dan bimbingan, serta efektivitas dalam menulis, dan pedoman wawancara yang meliputi tiga dimensi yaitu keterlibatan, inisiasi dalam menulis, dan efektivitas dalam menulis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa baik siswa maupun guru merespons secara positif terhadap penggunaan gambar berseri. Siswa menyampaikan bahwa seri gambar membuat menulis lebih menyenangkan, memicu kreativitas dan antusiasme mereka. Siswa berpikir bahwa struktur dan bantuan visual membantu mereka mengembangkan cerita. Guru juga menyampaikan bahwa gambar berseri efektif menarik perhatian siswa dan memberikan kerangka yang jelas untuk menulis, meningkatkan keterlibatan dan motivasi siswa. Selain itu, penelitian ini menyoroti bagaimana gambar berseri membantu siswa menghubungkan pengalaman pribadi mereka dengan menulis, dengan demikian meningkatkan keterampilan menulis mereka dalam hal organisasi, kosakata, dan mekanika. Namun, beberapa siswa masih menghadapi kesulitan dengan kosakata masa lalu dan tata bahasa, menunjukkan perlunya dukungan tambahan di area ini. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa gambar berseri adalah media yang bermanfaat dalam mengajar teks recount, karena meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa dan mendukung proses menulis. Guru mengakui manfaat seri gambar dalam mengatasi tantangan di kelas dan menciptakan atmosfer belajar yang positif. Namun demikian, guru juga perlu lebih menyadari kebutuhan individu siswa, terutama dalam hal keterampilan bahasa.

English Abstract

Writing skill is one of the important skills among listening, reading, and speaking skills, and it is essential for learning English as a foreign language. Stimulating students' enthusiasm for writing can be achieved through the use of visual teaching tools such as pictures. Therefore, this study investigated the perceptions of students and a teacher regarding the use of picture series in writing recount texts at SMK Cor Jesu, Malang. The research aims to describe students' and the teacher's opinions on the implementation of picture series in the classroom. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observations and interviews with 22 students and one English teacher. This research used study case method with two instruments: an observation sheet that covered three dimensions, engagement, comprehension and guidance, and effectiveness in writing, and an interview guideline which covered three dimensions, those are engagement, initiation in writing, and effectiveness in writing. The findings reveal that both students and the teacher responded positively to the use of picture series. Students reported that picture series made writing more enjoyable, sparking their creativity and enthusiasm. Students appreciated the structure and visual prompts, which facilitated idea generation and story development. The teacher also noted that picture series effectively captured students' attention and provided a clear framework for writing, enhancing student engagement and motivation. Furthermore, the research highlights how picture series helped students connect personal experiences to their writing, thereby improving their writing skills in terms of organization, vocabulary, and mechanics. However, some students still faced difficulties with past tense vocabulary and grammar, indicating a need for additional support in these areas. The study concluded that picture series were valuable media in teaching recount text as they enhance student engagement and support the writing process. The teacher acknowledged the benefits of picture series in addressing classroom challenges and promoting a positive learning atmosphere. Nevertheless, the teacher also needed to be more aware of individual student needs, especially regarding language skills.
