Abstract
Manipulasi adalah sifat utama seorang pemimpin yang memanfaatkan kepercayaan pengikutnya untuk keuntungan pribadi. Ini adalah sifat utama dari kepribadian Machiavellian, yang didasarkan pada pemikiran filsuf Italia Niccolò Machiavelli. Selain manipulasi, berdasarkan teori High Machiavellianism dari Christie dan Geis (1970), seorang Machiavellian juga digambarkan memiliki pandangan yang sinis dan tidak memiliki moralitas. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, peneliti bertujuan untuk mengungkap kepribadian Machiavellian yang muncul pada tokoh Komandan dalam film yang berjudul Beast of No Nation karya Cary Joji Fukunaga. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan psikologi. Data diambil dari elemen-elemen film seperti dialog dan perilaku tokoh. Dengan menggunakan metode ini, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa, karena didorong oleh obsesinya akan kekuasaan, Komandan telah berubah menjadi seorang Machiavellian dengan ketiga sifat tersebut. Dia manipulatif, sinis, dan tidak memiliki moralitas. Kepribadian Machiavellian sang Komandan pada kenyataannya membawa kerugian bagi orang-orang di sekitarnya dan juga dirinya sendiri. Karena penelitian ini berfokus pada kepribadian Machiavellian Komandan dalam film Beast of No Nation, peneliti selanjutnya disarankan untuk meneliti film lain yang berfokus pada pemicu kepribadian Machiavellian.
English Abstract
Manipulation is the main trait of a leader who utilizes his followers' trust for personal gain. This is the main trait of a Machiavellian personality, based on the thoughts of Italian philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli. In addition to manipulation, based on Christie and Geis's (1970) High Machiavellianism theory, Machiavellians are also described as having a cynical worldview and lacking morality. In this regard, the researcher aims to reveal the Machiavellian personality that appears in the character of the Commandant in the movie entitled Beast of No Nation by Cary Joji Fukunaga. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method with a psychological approach. The data were taken from film elements such as dialogue and figure behavior. By applying this method, this research found that being driven by his obsession with power; the Commandant has turned to be a Machiavellian with all of the three traits. He is manipulative, cynical, and lacks of morality. The Commandant’s Machiavellian personality, in fact, brings harm to those who are around him as well as to himself. Since this research focuses on the Machiavellian personality of the Commandant in Beast of No Nation movie, next researchers are suggested to examine other movies focusing on the trigger of Machiavellian personality.
