Abstract
Pemahaman membaca merupakan proses memahami informasi dan makna dalam teks. Pengajaran membaca untuk siswa kelas delapan diharapkan dapat memahami dan merespon makna teks tertulis fungsional dan esai singkat sederhana. Agar siswa bisa memahami sebuah teks, guru menerapkan strategi untuk memecahkan masalah pemahaman yang mereka hadapi dalam teks. Dalam mengajarkan pemahaman bacaan, ada banyak strategi yang bisa digunakan oleh guru untuk mengajarkan pemahaman bacaan pada teks sesuai dengan kemampuan siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah salah satu guru bahasa Inggris dan dua kelas siswa kelas delapan di SMP PGRI 01 Singosari. Instrumen data meliputi daftar periksa observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Data dikelompokkan dan dianalisis berdasarkan teknik dalam pengajaran membaca oleh Brown (2007) dan mengajarkan pemahaman bacaan oleh Morellion (2007) dan Boss & Vaughn (1994). Temuan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa guru memiliki strategi yang berbeda. Dalam mengajar membaca, guru menggunakan teknik tiga fasa. Sementara itu, dalam mengajarkan pemahaman bacaan, guru menggunakan strategi Questioning Answer Relationship, Story Mapping dan Story Retelling serta Aktivitas Membaca Sutradara Membaca. Guru menggunakan semua strategi tersebut di kelas VIII A. Sementara itu, guru menggunakan strategi Story Retelling dan Questioning Answer Relationship di kelas VIII D. Alasan guru menggunakan strategi tersebut karena menghindari siswa menjadi bosan. Bagi peneliti selanjutnya, akan sangat baik jika strategi tersebut dapat diterapkan dalam genre lain. Selain itu, peneliti juga menyarankan untuk melakukan penelitian selanjutnya yang membahas keefektifan strategi tersebut.
English Abstract
Reading comprehension ia a process of understanding the information and meaning in texts. Teaching reading for the eighth grade students are expected to be able to understand and respond meaningful of functional written text and simple short essay. In order to make the students comprehend a text, the teacher applied strategy to solve the comprehension problems they encounter in texts. In teaching reading comprehension, there were many strategies that can be used by teachers to teach reading comprehension on the text in accordance with the ability of students. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. The subject of the research are one of English teacher and two classes of the eighth grade students at SMP PGRI 01 Singosari. The data instrument included observation checklist, interview, and documentation. The data were classsified and analyzed based on the techniques in teaching reading by Brown (2007) and teaching reading comprehension by Morellion (2007) and Boss & Vaughn (1994). The finding showed that the teacher has different strategies. In teaching reading, the English teacher used three phase technique. Furthermore, in teaching reading comprehension, the English teacher used Questioning Answer Relationship, Story Mapping and Story Retelling Strategies, and Directed Reading Thingking Activity. The teacher used all those strategy in VIII A class. Meanwhile, the English teacher only used Story Retelling Strategies and Questioning Answer Relationship in VIII D class. The reason of the teacher used those strategy because it avoid students from being bored. For further researchers, it would be very good if those strategy can be implementation in other genres. In addition, the researcher suggests conducting the next research which is deal with the effectiveness of those strategy.
