Abstract

English Abstract

Too much self-disclosure on social media has the potential to develop into an online addiction. In the previous study, it has been found that X user have the tendency to do more self-disclosure compared to Facebook and Instagram users. One of the taxonomies that is considered reliable to predict one’s behavior and personality traits is the Big Five Personality (BFP) model. This study aims to determine the predictive role of personality traits towards the self-disclosure behavior of X users in early adulthood. This is a quantitative-correlative study involving 130 active X users in the age 20-30 years old that’s selected through purposive sampling method. The participant personality was measured by Big Five Inventory (BFI) scale and the General Disclosiveness Scales (GDS). The data was analyzed by multipleregression techniques. The results showed that there were roles of personality traits towards self-disclosure by X user, in which only Openness to Experience (0,045), Extraversion (0,036) and Neuroticism (0,001) traits have significant roles towards self-disclosure, meanwhile Conscientiousness (0,545) and Agreeableness (0,341) have no significant roles towards self-disclosure, with value p<0,005. The findings of this study implicate that there is a predictive role between the Openness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism traits towards self-disclosure behavior of X users: the higher individual’s tendency in Openness, Extraversion or Neuroticism traits, the higher their inclination to do self-disclosure. This finding can be used to develop BFP theories, especially on the mentioned traits, and to identify which interventions are more suitable for one’s online behavior.
