Abstract
Pronomina adalah bagian dari jenis kata dari mayoritas bahasa di dunia. Promina tunggal orang ketiga dalam Bahasa Inggris dibagi berdasarkan biner gender, sehingga dapat dilihat bahwa Bahasa Inggris tidak mempunyai pronomina tunggal orang ketiga non-biner. Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, ditemukan bahwa promina they digunakan untuk merujuk pada orang tunggal untuk menunjukkan bahwa orang tersebut tidak berkeinginan untuk diidentifikasi sebagai salah satu biner gender. Fenomena ini terjadi di The Washington Post yang telah menambahkan they tunggal ke dalam acuan penulisan mereka. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menjawab pertanyaan: bagaimana pronomina they, them, their, theirs, dan themselves digunakan dalam artikel The Washington Post pada tahun 2016. Dengan menggunakan bantuan perangkat korpus, penelitian ini dilaksanakan secara kualitatif untuk menganalisa sebuah korpus kecil yang terdiri dari 100 artikel The Washington Post yang dipublikasikan dalam tahun 2016. Pronomina yang diidentifikasi digunakan secara tunggal kemudian dianalisa lebih lanjut sebagai sumber data penelitian ini dan dikategorisasikan ke dalam kelas utama kata benda Crystal (2003) dan klasifikasi indefinite pronoun Cobuild (2011). Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa The Washington Post menggunakan they sebagai pronomina tunggal dengan merujuk kepada frase yang mempunyai jenis-jenis kata benda sebagai berikut: proper noun yang terdiri dari nama orang dan organisasi, common count concrete noun yang terdiri dari kata benda yang menunjukkan orang dan benda, common count abstract noun yang terdiri dari kata benda yang menunjukkan sesuatu yang abstrak, dan 6 indefinite pronoun yang digunakan untuk merujuk pada orang. Sebagian besar rujukanrujukan pronomina ini mempunyai gender yang tidak dapat diidentifikasi. Akan tetapi, beberapa rujukan mempunyai gender yang dapat diidentifikasi, yaitu common count concrete noun child dan proper noun dalam bentuk 6 nama orang. Rujukan yang gendernya dapat diidentifikasi ini merujuk pada individu yang mengidentifikasikan diri mereka tidak dalam salah satu biner gender. Rujukan tersebut digunakan hanya dalam satu konteks, yaitu LGBT. Peneliti selanjutnya yang tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian yang serupa disarankan untuk memperluas rentang waktu dalam mengumpulkam data karena hal tersebut merupakan limitasi dari penelitian ini.
English Abstract
Pronoun is a part of speech in most of languages in the world. Thirdperson singular pronouns in English are separated into gender binary, making it clear that English lacks non-binary third-person singular pronoun. In recent years, it is found that pronoun they is used to refer to singular person to show that the person does not wish to be identified as one of gender binary. This phenomenon occurs in The Washington Post which has added singular they to their stylebook. Therefore this study is conducted to answer the research problem: how pronouns they, them, their, theirs, and themselves, are used as singular pronouns in articles of The Washington Post published in 2016. With the aid of corpus instrument software, this study qualitatively analyses a small corpus consisting of 100 articles of The Post published in 2016. References of pronouns identified as singular are proceeded as the data source of this study and categorized into Crystal’s (2003) main classes of noun and Cobuild’s (2011) classification of indefinite pronoun. The study reveals that The Washington Post uses they as singular with the references of proper noun which consists of names of people and organizations, common count concrete noun which consists of nouns denoting persons and a noun denoting thing, common count abstract noun which consists of nouns denoting abstract entities, and 6 indefinite pronouns which are used to refer to persons. These references are found mostly to be nonrerefential, where gender is indefinite. However, some are found to be referential which are common count concrete noun child and proper nouns in the form of names of people. These referential references refer to individuals who identify themselves not in one of gender binary. They are found to be used in a context only, which is LGBT. To future researchers who are interested in conducting similar study, they are suggested to widen the time span in collecting the data as it was the limitation of this study.
