Abstract

English Abstract

Code-switching has become an increasingly common paradigm among Englishspeaking worldwide. Students can employ code-switching to help them communicate in English and participate in classroom activities. However, before utilizing code-switching, it is crucial to take into account how educators and students see the practice. This study aims to investigate the types of code-switching employed by the students and to explore the students' perceptions of the use of codeswitching to increase speaking confidence. To analyze the research problem, the researcher employed a qualitative method. Qualitative data is gathered through observation and interviews with five participants. Those participants were selected through the purposive sampling method: ninth-grade students at SMP Shalahuddin Malang. The result of this research showed that students employ three types of code-switching: intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag-switching. Intra-sentential switching has the highest frequency of use by students, appearing in 63.6% of the 16 utterances. Code-switching effectively allows EFL students to communicate with their peers and teachers in class. This is evident from the interview results, where the participants mentioned that code-switching helps them increase their speaking confidence and performance. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in helping students improve their speaking skills and motivation, boosting their selfesteem, and developing a low affective filter.
