Abstract
English Abstract
The building sector accounts for more than 40% of global energy use and about 35- 40% of CO2 emissions. With the growth of urbanization, population, migration, and deteriorating environmental conditions, building energy consumption is increasing. Ponorogo Regency, with its tropical climate, faces a big challenge in maintaining the thermal comfort of buildings. Rainfall and high humidity as well as generally high temperatures emphasize the importance of passive cooling techniques for thermal efficiency. Passive building design is very relevant in tropical areas such as Ponorogo. This study examines the performance of passive design in Joglo houses in Ngrogung Village, Ngebel District, Ponorogo. Joglo houses use traditional elements such as building orientation, roof casing, building shroud, opening placement, materials, and environmental arrangement to understand and assess the performance effectiveness and application of passive design elements of vernacular architecture in reducing energy consumption and maintaining thermal comfort. The research methods include a quantitative approach with literature study, documentation, field observation, and temperature and humidity measurements using Hobo Data Logger, as well as qualitative visual analysis of passive design. The results of the study concluded that several elements of passive design, such as optimal building orientation, the presence of heat insulation in the under-roof room, walls with shadows and bright colors, porous or latticed window openings with shade, and supportive outdoor environmental arrangements, succeeded in improving thermal comfort well. However, some aspects such as roof volume, canopy width, roof color, window opening area, and floor height still do not meet optimal standards. The average temperature in the house during the three-month period of measurement (October-December) showed generally comfortable conditions with an average temperature of 25.77°C, but there were situations when the temperature was uncomfortable, especially during the day to evening. In addition, the high humidity level in the house exceeds the recommended standard, indicating a problem in the thermal comfort experience in this Joglo House.
