Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between food purchasing behavior and the food waste generated by university students in Malang City, Indonesia. Specifically, it aimed to determine the influence of food purchasing behavior on food waste among university students. The objective were to describe the condition of food waste among university students in Malang and to analyze the influence of food purchasing behavior on food waste among university students in Malang City, Indonesia. The research framework outlined three key variables: Food Purchasing Behavior (X1), Sociodemographic profile (X2), and Individual Preferences (X3). These variables play crucial roles in shaping the outcome of food waste generation. The first variable is Food Purchasing Behavior includes such as Changes in Purchase and Stockpiling Food. The Sociodemographic Profile encompasses indicators, like Age, Gender, Income Level/Pocket Money. Individual Preferences cover aspects, such as Frequency of Purchase, Special Diet Status, Meal Planning, Food Quality, and The Availability of Refrigerator. These variables (X1, X2, and X3), converge to the influence food purchasing behavior on food waste generated. The study was conducted purposively at universities with the largest student populations in Malang. The total sample was 403 students from three universities, such as Brawijaya University, State Malang University, and Muhammadiyah Malang University who were still pursuing degrees and routinely purchased and consumed food at their place of study. Data was collected using a quisionnare and Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis was perfomed using SPSS software. The findings revealed that the the average food waste generated by students in Malang was less than ¼ part or approximately less than 137.5 grams per plate. Compared to other food types, vegetables and legumes were the most wasted. The result of ordinal regression analysis was found that Food Purchasing Behavior (X1) such as stockpiling Food positively and significantly affect on wasted meat products and fruit. The variable of Sociodemographic profile (X2) such as age, gender, and income level/pocket money positively and significantly affect on wasted general food waste (one portion of meal), legumes, roots tubers, meat products, eggs, and vegetables. The variable of Individual Preferences (X3), such as frequency of purchase, food quality, meal planning, special diet status, and the availability of refrigerator positively and significantly affect on general food waste, wasted roots tuvers, meat products, legumes, egg, vegetables, dairy product, and fruit. The studyvii indicated that all factors of food purchasing behavior significantly influenced students’ daily consumption, leading to food waste if not properly managed. The study highlights the importance of understanding and informing strategies to reduce food waste through improved purchasing behavior, such as proper meal planning and food storage. These can raise awareness of the importance of food management among students and serve as a reference for the government or stakeholders in determining strategic policies to reduce food waste due to student’s purchasing decisions.
