Abstract

Kemampuan komunikasi verbal merupakan salah satu hambatan yang dialami oleh remaja dengan Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi verbal remaja ASD adalah metode Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas metode PECS dalam meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi verbal pada remaja ASD. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Single Subject Research (SSR) dengan desain penelitian A-B-A. Subjek penelitian ini adalah remaja dengan ASD berusia 17 tahun di Homeschooling Cerdas Istimewa Malang yang memiliki kemampuan komunikasi verbal yang kurang. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi dengan behavioral checklist. Data dianalisis dengan teknik analisis statistik deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan metode Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi verbal remaja Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah intervensi metode PECS dapat dijadikan alternatif metode untuk meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi individu dengan ASD.

English Abstract

The ability of verbal communication is one of the obstacles experienced by teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). One of the methods that can be used to improve the verbal communication skills of teenagers with ASD is the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) method in enhancing verbal communication skills in adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study employs the Single Subject Research (SSR) method with an A-B-A research design. The research subjects are 17-year-old adolescents with ASD at Homeschooling Cerdas Istimewa Malang who exhibit limited verbal communication abilities. Data collection in this research is conducted through observation with a behavioral checklist. The data is analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The results of this research showed that the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) method is effective to increase verbal communication skills of adolescents with with ASD. The implication of this research is PECS intervention method can be used as an alternative method to improve communication skills in children with autism.
