Abstract

Emphazised femininity yang mengatur representasi perempuan di lingkup sosial dilanggengkan dalam lingkup keluarga melalui ekspektasi orang tua terhadap anak sulung perempuan, menciptakan beban ganda untuk memenuhi ekspektasi sosial terkait peranannya di lingkup keluarga. Fenomena yang menciptakan stereotype anak sulung perempuan ideal ini direpresentasikan melalui karakter Rini dalam film Pengabdi Setan (2017). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap emphasized femininity pada peranan Rini di lingkup keluarga selaku anak sulung perempuan, serta pemaknaan informan terhadap hal ini. Menggunakan metode kualitatif kritis dengan reception analysis Stuart Hall, penelitian ini melibatkan 16 informan yang dipilih menggunakan metode purposive sampling dengan kriteria anak sulung perempuan yang menempuh studi strata 1 di Pulau Jawa, pernah menonton film Pengabdi Setan (2017), serta memiliki pandangan terkait femininitas dan peranan berbasis gender. Preffered reading dilakukan menggunakan teori semiotika televisi John Fiske, yang kemudian dikomparasikan dengan hasil Focus Group Discussion (FGD) untuk menentukan klasifikasi informan dalam three hypothetical positions Stuart Hall. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan terdapat dua wacana dominan pada karakter Rini dalam film Pengabdi Setan (2017), yaitu dikesampingkan dalam aspek pendidikan dan diberikan tanggung jawab di bidang domestik. Berdasarkan hasil FGD, seluruh informan merasakan ekspektasi yang sesuai dengan stereotype anak sulung perempuan dalam keluarganya masing-masing dan memahami emphasized femininity pada peranan anak sulung perempuan yang ditampilkan melalui karakter Rini. Mayoritas informan berada dalam negotiated code position, menekankan telah adanya penolakan dari mayoritas informan terhadap idealisasi peranan anak sulung perempuan di lingkup keluarga, meskipun masih dipengaruhi oleh ekspektasi sosial yang ditekankan sejak dini.

English Abstract

Emphasized femininity, which regulates the representation of women in social spheres, is perpetuated within the family context through parental expectations of firstborn daughters, creating a double burden to fulfill social expectations regarding their roles in the family sphere. This phenomenon creates an idealized stereotype of firstborn daughters represented by ‘Rini’ in "Pengabdi Setan" (2017). This research aims to uncover the emphasized femininity within Rini's roles in the family sphere as a firstborn daughter and the respondents' interpretations regarding this matter. Employing a critical qualitative method with Stuart Hall's reception analysis, this study involves 16 respondents selected through purposive sampling criteria, specifically firstborn daughters pursuing undergraduate studies in Java Island who watched the film "Pengabdi Setan" (2017) and hold perspectives on femininity and gender-based roles. Preferred reading using John Fiske's television semiotics theory compared with the results of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to determine the classification of respondents into three hypothetical positions proposed by Stuart Hall. This research reveals two dominant discourses surrounding the character Rini in the film "Pengabdi Setan" (2017) being marginalized in education and burdened with domestic responsibilities. Based on the results of the FGD, all respondents experience expectations consistent with the stereotype of firstborn daughters within their respective families and understand the emphasized femininity portrayed through the character Rini. The majority of respondents are classified into the negotiated code position, highlighting the rejection towards the idealization concept of firstborn daughter’s role within the family sphere, albeit still influenced by social expectations instilled from an early age.
