Abstract
English Abstract
Microplastics are small plastic particles (1 μm–5 mm). Microplastics that increase rapidly and are not handled properly will become pollution and end up in water bodies through sewers. The accumulation of microplastics in the ocean is caused by anthropogenic activities on land, such as municipal solid waste and industrial manufacturing. However, so far there has not been much research regarding microplastic pollution in sewers due to industrial activities. Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (SIER) is a centralized industrial area in the city of Surabaya with a total area of 245 ha and occupied by more than 200 companies. The variety of industrial activities combined with the type of open surface drainage channels means there is concern that microplastic pollution will occur in the channels due to industrial activities. This research was conducted to determine the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in the Southern SIER Industrial Area. Sampling was carried out at 13 points along the channel using the grab sampling method. The sample analysis process includes filtering, WPO (Wet Peroxide Oxidation), density separation, and microplastic identification. Microplastics were analyzed based on abundance and characteristics (size, shape, color and type of polymer). Ward method cluster analysis was carried out to determine the relationship between abundance and characteristics with the type of industry. The research results showed that the abundance of microplastics was between 76.33– 548.33 particles/L. Characteristics based on size are dominated by Small Microplastic Particles (SMP) (92.29%); fragment-dominated shape (49.31%); predominantly black color (69.98%); and the polymer type is dominated by polyethylene (PE). Cluster analysis show that there is a relationship between the characteristics of microplastics with the type of industry. The food and plastic industries are indicated to be contributors to microplastics at the study location. It is difficult to determine the relationship between abundance and type of industry, but abundance values tend to increase from upstream to downstream.
