Abstract

Eugenol is a major constituent composed in clove essential oil, which is produced through extraction. The effect of eugenol in the pharmaceutical field has been investigated to haveantioxidant, antibacterial and anesthetic properties. This work is aimed to compare the performance of maceration, hydrodistillation, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), and Soxhlet in obtaining eugenol from clove oil. The best technique, furthermore, will be given varied factors: solvent types (employs ethanol and methanol), and sample-to-solvent ratio (1:10 and 1:15) that aims to identify the effect on the oil yields and eugenol content. The comparison study of those selected methods varied factors has not been reported previously, thus, it will fill the gap in this field. HPLC UV-Vis was utilized in the analysis of eugenol concentration. Soxhlet extraction gave the highest yields and eugenol content. There is no significant difference in the varied factors comparison. However, methanol gave higher result than ethanol, and with the higher ratio the eugenol content increased. In conclusion, method selection can affect theyields and eugenol contents in clove oil. Nevertheless, the results obtained from method comparison are less comparable as the processing time, the working solvent, and the separation technique were carried out differently in each method. More consistent experimental design is recommended as it leads to a better data analysis approach. The results in the present study can be taken as a consideration in developing further studies on clove extraction or method comparison.
