Abstract
English Abstract
Tiktok, a hotly discussed social media platform, provides flexibility for its users to access various kinds of content, including content related to wealth, ownership, image, and status, or content that leads to the concept of materialism. TikTok users who display materialistic content are thought to be able to generate envy among other viewers when they see related content. Previous research results indicate a relationship between high materialism and decreased self-control. This experiment aims to determine the role of trait self-control as a moderator of the influence of envy conditions on materialistic aspirations in TikTok users. Researcher used a randomized controlled-between-subject experimental design considering treatment (benign and malicious envy) and the factors behind the formation of envy (deservingness and control potential) with a total of 211 participants (Benign = 103; Malicious = 108; Male = 22.7%; Female = 77.3%; M Age = 20.79) undergraduate students. Participants completed the trait self-control scale, aspiration index scale, Pain-driven Dual Envy scale, and randomly received video stimuli and envy scenarios. The results of the moderation test show that the self-control trait cannot moderate the influence of envy conditions on materialistic aspirations in TikTok users. However, the results of additional analysis with state envy show the significance of the interaction role of trait self-control on the benign envy component of higher materialistic aspirations. Therefore, the self-control trait can act as an inhibitor of the response tendency between benign envy and materialistic aspirations.
