English Abstract

Conflict cannot be avoided in life as Simmel stated that conflict is the basic part of socialization. Literature brings up social conflict into a story. Besides, conflict is the main key of a story as it builds the plot and contributes to the continuity of a story. Korean adaptation series Little Women brings social conflict in the society that is different from the adapted work that was first released in 1868. Since adaptation is not only copying the adapted work and the fact that both the work has a huge gap in terms of time, setting, and culture resulting on the changes to relates to the Korean society. The most significant changes happen in the conflict. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the changes of conflict that is made by Kim Hee Won and the motive behind the changes of conflict. The researcher uses the classification of conflict proposed by Soekanto (2002) to analyze the changes of conflict and adaptation theory proposed by Hutcheon (2006) to analyze the motives behind the changes of conflict. The data were taken from the narration and dialogue in the novel and the scene and dialogue from the Korean series. The results of this study shows that there are two kinds of conflict that are changed in the Korean series namely the personal and social class conflict. Furthermore, the changes of conflict show some motive behind it namely the economic lures, cultural capital, and personal motive. The results discovers that some changes in the Korean series were made to correlate the story with the South Korean society. Future researchers who are interested in analyzing the same adaptation series are suggested to examine the social gap between social classes that is shown in the Korean series Little Women using the sociology of literature as the approach.
