Yasin,, Rachma Aulia Jayanthy Exploring the Monster's Role in Patrick Ness’ Novel A Monster Calls Through Propp's Theory of Character Types. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

Vladimir Propp’s theory of character types defines seven archetypes that play an important role in narrative stories. These types include the hero, the villain, the donor, the helper, the princess, the dispatcher, and the false hero. A 2011 novel, A Monster Calls, portrays the character descriptions that can be formed into Propp’s theory of character types throughout the monster and the protagonist. This study aims to clarify how the relationship between Conor and the monster evolves and changes as the plot progresses, as well as the monster’s role and what it conveys in the story. This study is descriptive qualitative research that utilizes narrative theories related to the character types of Vladimir Propp and examines the specific characterization of the monster as the donor and the helper, which shows its significant presence in Conor’s life. The Northrop-Frye theory of symbols was also conducted in this study. The data collection will be obtained by applying novel components through characters and symbolism in the novel A Monster Calls. Propp’s theory of character types will be used as the basis for describing the monster’s role as the donor and the helper, Conor as the hero, and Conor’s mother as the princess.
