Abstract
Figurative Language adalah bahasa yang menggunakan cara non-harfiah untuk mengungkapkan gagasan. Sulit bagi masyarakat, bahkan pelajar, untuk memahaminya karena maknanya berbeda dengan konteks. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis figurative language yang digunakan dalam lirik lagu Taylor Swift di album ‘Folklore’ dengan menggunakan teori jenis figurative language dari Perrine (1992). Data diambil dari channel YouTube Taylor Swift dengan memilih 3 lagu yang memiliki streaming terbanyak sedangkan 3 lagu lainnya dipilih karena keterkaitannya. Lagu-lagunya adalah exile (feat. Bon Iver), my tears ricochet, the 1, cardigan, betty dan august. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa 11 jenis figurative language yang digunakan dalam album ‘Folklore’ karya Taylor Swift: 4 data (9,3%) personifikasi, 2 data (4,6%) apostrof, 1 data (2,2%) metonimi, 8 data ( 18.6%) simbol, 1 datum (2.2%) alegori, 4 data (9.3%) paradoks, 8 data (18.6%) hiperbola, 2 data (4.6%) meremehkan, 6 data (14%) ironi , 6 data (14%) simile, dan 1 datum (2,2%) metafora. Terungkap bahwa hiperbola dan simbol merupakan jenis figurative language yang paling dominan digunakan dalam album tersebut. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa Taylor Swift menggunakan hiperbola dan simbol untuk menyampaikan pesan dengan baik dan mengajak pendengar untuk memahami lirik melebihi apa yang ditulis. Sehingga membuat pendengarnya semakin apresiatif dan menginspirasi mereka untuk melakukan hal yang sama seperti Taylor Swift
English Abstract
Figurative language is a language that uses a non-literal way to express ideas. It is very challenging for people, even students, to understand because it differs in meaning from its context and reality. This study aims to analyze the figurative language used in Taylor Swift's song lyrics in the ‘Folklore’ album using Perrine's (1992) theory of kinds of figurative language. The data is taken from Taylor Swift’s YouTube channel by choosing 3 songs that has the most stream while the other 3 is chosen due to its apparent connection. The songs are exile (feat. Bon Iver), my tears ricochet, the 1, cardigan, betty and august. The research methodology used in the study is qualitative method. The findings revealed that 11 types of figurative language were used in ‘Folklore’ album by Taylor Swift: 4 data (9.3%) of personification, 2 data (4.6%) of apostrophe, 1 datum (2.2%) of metonymy, 8 data (18.6%) of symbol, 1 datum (2.2%) of allegory, 4 data (9.3%) of paradox, 8 data (18.6% )of hyperbole, 2 data (4.6%) of understatement, 6 data (14%) of irony, 6 data (14%) of simile, and 1 datum (2.2%) of metaphor. It is revealed that hyperbole and symbols are the most dominant types of figurative language used in the album. This indicated that Taylor Swift used hyperbole and symbols to properly deliver the message and invite listeners to understand the lyrics beyond what was written. Thus, it makes the listeners more appreciative and inspires them to do the same as Taylor Swift.
