Abstract
Etnosentrisme merupakan salah satu permasalahan sosial yang terjadi dalam masyarakat yang disebabkan oleh adanya sikap tidak hormat suatu ras terhadap ras atau kelompok lain yang mengakibatkan buruknya komunikasi antar ras. Permasalahan seperti itu dapat diselesaikan dengan menggunakan media komunikasi seperti makanan untuk membangun kembali hubungan antar ras. Film The Hundred-Foot Journey mengangkat konflik etnis sebagai tema utama yang menceritakan tentang etnis India dan Perancis yang kurang saling menghormati dan komunikasi yang buruk karena perbedaan ras dan budaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana makanan yang digambarkan dalam film berperan sebagai media komunikasi bagi kedua etnis. Data dikumpulkan dari adegan film The Hundred-Foot Journey dan dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan gastronomi karena objek penelitiannya adalah makanan yang ditampilkan dalam film tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa makanan yang ditampilkan dalam film tersebut membawa nilai-nilai sebagai media komunikasi bagi kedua etnis tersebut. Nilai-nilai tersebut adalah kebersamaan dan penerimaan. Nilai-nilai yang terdapat pada masakan kedua etnis ini berarti bahwa mereka berbagi nilai-nilai yang sama melalui makanannya dan menjadi cara makanan tersebut bertindak sebagai media komunikasi di antara mereka.
English Abstract
Ethnocentrism is one of the social problems happened in the society caused by the disrespectful act from one race towards other races or groups which lead to a worse communication between them. That kind of problem can be solved using a medium of communication such as food to re-build the relation between races. The movie The Hundred-Foot Journey brings the conflict of ethnics as the main theme which tells a story about Indian and French ethnics with lack of mutual respect and worst communication because of the race and cultural differences. This research aims to analyze how the food depicted in the movie act as communication medium for both ethnics. The data collected from the movie The Hundred-Foot Journey scenes and analyzed using the gastronomy approach since the object of the study is the food shown in the movie. The result shows that the food depicted in the movie brought some values as the communication medium for both ethnics. The values are togetherness and acceptance. These values found in both ethnics’ cuisines, means that they share the same values through the food and become the way how the food act as communication medium between them.
