Abstract
Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is a drama-comedy film set in the Batak Tribe, first released on June 2, 2022, directed by Bene Dion Rajaguguk. The film tells a story about a couple with four children, three of whom are living away from Sumatra. The parents, longing for their children, desire their return. However, due to personal issues with their father, the three children are wont to come back. The parents then come up with the idea of pretending to divorce to make their children worry and return home. Instead of going smoothly, this plan triggers other family issues. In addition to the filmmaker's intention to portray Batak traditions and customs, the film depicts some Batak traditions and customs that can lead to tradition issues, and not all descendants of the Batak Tribe agree with them. Therefore, this research aims to explore how Batak young adults perceive the representation of traditions and customs in the film NgeriNgeri Sedap. This research is qualitative-interpretive research using the reception analysis research method, which focuses on the construction of the reception and interpretation of meaning from messages conveyed by the media according to the backgrounds of each audience. Data used were obtained from conducting Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with six informants considered as film audiences and from the film itself. Data from the film were analyzed using Roland Barthe’s semiotics theory, resulting in four preferred readings. These four preferred readings were used as the main discussion points during the FGDs with the six informants. The answers obtained during the FGDs were analyzed, and the informants were classified into three audience positions according to Stuart Hall: Dominant-Hegemonic Position, Negotiated Position, and Oppositional Position. In general, the results showed that two out of the six informants agreed and could understand the meaning of the message the filmmaker wanted to convey in the film. The other four informants also agreed with the idea but not entirely; they preferred to adjust and make the idea more acceptable to themselves. The researcher also found that the perceptions and interpretations of all informants were influenced by their individual life backgrounds. A limitation of this study is that it only discusses the perceptions, interpretations, and acceptance of Bataknese Young Adults regarding the portrayal of Tradition Issues in the film. Therefore, the suggestion given by the researcher to future researchers is to conduct a more detailed research on tradition issues and involve more diverse subjects, either younger or older.
