Abstract

English Abstract

World Bank data states that Indonesia has a newborn mortality rate of 20 per 1000 live births in 2020. The causes of Indonesian newborn deaths were recorded by UNICEF in 2015 with the largest percentage occurring due to prematurity (35.5%). Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is one of the methods of care for preterm infants but is still not optimally implemented in Indonesia. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of the KMC on the blood sugar levels of premature babies, physiological function of premature babies, and the relationship between physiological function and blood sugar levels of premature babies. The study used a cross-sectional method with a large sample of 27 babies from the population treated in the RSSA neonatology ward. Kruskal-Wallis analysis of the KMC variable on blood sugar levels found a significant difference with a value of p = 0.017 (p < 0.05) while the analysis of the KMC variable on physiological function did not prove a significant difference. There was also no relationship between physiological function variables and blood sugar levels with a significant correlation value of p > 0.05 for all variables. It was concluded that KMC affects the blood sugar levels of premature babies but does not affect the physiological function of premature babies, and physiological function is not related to the blood sugar levels of premature babies.
