Abstract
Berangkat dari konsep pengembangan hubungan, terdapat salah satu fase deterioration atau tahap kemunduran hubungan yang ditandai dengan menurunnya kualitas hubungan. Tahap ini sendiri biasa dipicu oleh adanya konflik dalam hubungan tersebut. Dalam merespon konflik, beberapa peneliti komunikasi dan literatur terdahulu masih menganggap bahwa komunikasi merupakan cara terbaik dalam penyelesaian masalah. Berdasarkan data yang didapatkan dalam penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa beberapa orang justru menggunakan strategi baru dalam menyelesaikan konflik yaitu dengan silent treatment. Secara akademis, studi-studi yang telah dilakukan sebelumnya belum membahas silent treatment sebagai sebuah permasalahan komunikasi ataupun memandang diam sebagai sebuah cara atau bentuk komunikasi untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Dengan demikian, analisis mendalam terhadap silent treatment melalui perspektif komunikasi khususnya dalam kaitannya dengan penyelesaian konflik interpersonal menjadi penting untuk dilakukan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana silent treatment dilakukan dalam hubungan romantis sebagai alternatif penyelesaian konflik interpersonal khususnya dalam hubungan romantis. Mengingat karakteristik hubungan romantis sedikit berbeda dan lebih unik dibandingkan dengan jenis hubungan lain karena melibatkan beberapa dimensi seperti komitmen, gairah, dan keintiman, maka silent treatment sebagai resolusi konflik yang dilakukan dalam romantic relationship menjadi menarik untuk dibahas. Jenis penelitian ini sendiri adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan wawancara sebagai teknik pengumpulan data dan melibatkan enam orang informan sesuai dengan kriteria yang dibutuhkan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa silent treatment bisa membantu mereka yang terlibat dalam hubungan romantis untuk menyelesaikan masalah dengan cara penghindaran (avoidance) berkaitan dengan conflict styles. Keberhasilan silent treatment juga didukung dengan kondisi tertentu seperti tercapainya tujuan-tujuan silent treatment yang diharapkan oleh pelaku.
English Abstract
Hailing from the concept of relationship development, there exists a phase of relationship deterioration characterized by the decline of the relationship’s quality. This particular phase can be triggered by internal conflicts within the relationship. Numerous communication scholars endorse communication as the best way to solve conflicts within a relationship. Conversely, data acquired on this research showed that some people alternately chose to use silent treatment as a new strategy in resolving conflicts. So far, there hasn’t been an academic study that consider silent treatment either as a communicational problem or as a way to resolve conflicts. Hence, it is imperative to carry out an in-depth examination of silent treatment within the framework of communicational science, particularly in relation to interpersonal conflicts resolution. This study aims to delineate how silent treatment operates within romantic relationships as an alternative mean to address interpersonal conflicts. It is worth noting that the involvement of variables such as commitment, passion, and intimacy within a romantic relationship renders it distinct and unique from other types of relationships. Thus, the use of silent treatment as a conflict resolution strategy in romantic relationship emerged as a compelling topic of discussion. This descriptive qualitative study employs interviews as a data collecting method with 6 informants. The result shows that silent treatment facilitates conflict resolution in a romantic relationship through avoidance within the framework of conflict styles. The efficacy of silent treatment also relies on l particular conditions such as the attainment of goals expected by the perpetrator.
