Abstract
English Abstract
Smoking can increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by increasing chronic inflammation in the blood vessels and causing atherosclerosis. The inflammatory process can affect the increase in C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels. In addition, physical activity such as exercise training can also affect CRP levels in the body. Exercise training can reduce the production of proinflammatory cytokines so that inflammatory biomarkers are reduced. This study aims to determine the effect of exercise training on C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels in smokers. This research method was Quasi Experiment with Pretest and Posttest Nonequivalent Control Group Design. This study involved 20 participants consisting of 10 participants in the intervention group, namely smokers and 10 control group participants, namely non-smokers. Samples were selected using purposive sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Research data were obtained from filling out questionnaires, examining blood samples and Hypersensitive C-Reactive Protein (Hs-CRP) tests before and after exercise training to analyze CRP levels. Data analysis used was Wilcoxon test to analyze the difference in CRP levels before and after exercise training in each group and Mann Whitney test to compare the difference in CRP levels between groups. Statistical test results showed no significant difference between CRP levels before and after exercise training in both groups. However, there was a significant comparison between CRP levels in the control and intervention groups. Judging from the average CRP levels decreased after exercise training in both groups. It is recommended that exercise training habits can be continued as a good lifestyle change, especially in smokers.
