Abstract

English Abstract

Background: Toothbrushes that are commonly used to clean the oral cavity can be contaminated with various types of microorganisms, thus allowing the spread of disease both from the environment and between individuals. Streptococcus mutans is one of the microorganisms that most commonly contaminates toothbrush bristles and is also the main bacterium that causes caries and various other dental and oral health issues. The charcoal content in toothbrushes is claimed to have antibacterial properties so that it can reduce bacterial contamination, but there is not much scientific evidence to support this claim. Objective: this study aims to determine the differences of Streptococcus mutans bacterial count between charcoal and noncharcoal bristles through In Vitro. Methods: bacterial suspension was exposed to 32 toothbrush samples consisting of 16 charcoal toothbrushes and 16 noncharcoal toothbrushes. After 24 hours, the toothbrush bristles were rinsed and then cultured on agar medium for 24 hours. Bacterial counting was carried out using the Total Plate Count method using a manual colony counter. Result: based on an independent t-test p<0.005, the differences of Streptococcus mutans bacterial count between charcoal and noncharcoal bristles was statistically significant, the number of bacteria on charcoal toothbrush bristles was lower than the number of bacteria on non-charcoal toothbrush bristles. Conclusion: there were differences of Streptococcus mutans bacterial count between charcoal and noncharcoal bristles.
