Supervisor: Muhammad Rozin, S.S., M.A Key Words: verbal abuse, taboo words, mobile legends bang bang One of the popular online games is Mobile Legends Bang Bang (MLBB). Players use communication features to form good strategies and make friends in the game community. This feature is often misused by players to criticize, or mock other players which leads to verbal abuse. This study will explain further about the verbal abuse carried out by MLBB players by observing the types of taboo words used, and the purpose of the players doing it. The research design used is descriptive qualitative accompanied by observation, along with the theory of Jay (2009) and Liedlich (1973). Observations were made using an online questionnaire and were filled out by 43 respondents who are active MLBB players aged over 17 years. The results obtained from this study are: 1. The player’s habit of cursing; 2. Found 9 types of taboo words; 3. Found 6 motives for the use of taboo words. The most used taboo words are the animal names, such as dog and pig. Sexual references are also often used to curse, the impact is quite serious, namely sexual harassment. While the motive that most often arises is to provide catharsis. The use of taboo words is used to release anger and annoyance, but in certain situations taboo words can also be used to show positive reactions such as surprise and admiration for something while playing. The author suggests for future researchers to use different theories and research methods from previous research. The use of a digital ethnographic approach is also suggested for recent research. In addition to future researchers, the author also gives advice to online game players to keep creating a competitive, clean and friendly playing atmosphere for all people.
