Abstract

English Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020. This has an impact on the difficulty of access to food due to restrictions on community mobilization. Not many studies have discussed the impact of the pandemic on household food access and availability. This study aimed to examine differences in household food access and availability based on the socio-demographic of adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The research design was used analytic observational with a cross-sectional approach involving 249 respondents 26-50 years old from Indonesia. Sampling method of this research used census sampling which was conducted by google form. The results showed that the respondents were dominated by women who had diploma/bachelor degree, who worked as civil servants or private employees. In a pandemic situation, most respondents still prefer to buy groceries at the market or stalls (92.5%) rather than through e-commerce. Based on cross-tab and chi-square analysis, it was found that there were significant differences (p<0.05) on several items from the category of ways to get groceries including harvests, assistance from the government, and online purchases. Moreover, places to get groceries include supermarkets and e-commerce. Foodstuffs that are difficult to obtain include staples, vegetables, fruit, meat and poultry, sugar and oil based on gender, education level, and income. Most foodstuffs were difficult to obtain due to rising prices or limited money. Our work has led us to conclude that there are differences in household food access and availability during the COVID-19 pandemic based on socio-demographic.
