Abstract

Malnutrition in children caused by unhealthy eating patterns has been being global phenomenon, one of which is in primary school-age children in Indonesia. Undernutrition and overnutrition are the main forms of malnutrition which are characterized by disturbed growth and development of children due to nutritional imbalances. Undernutrition is a form of malnutrition that occurs when the body is malnourished, while overnutrition is a form of malnutrition that occurs when the body is over-nourished. These two cases of malnutrition have a very significant impact on children's growth and development, such as experiencing infections and diarrhea, impaired cognitive development, and growth delays. If this continues to happen, it will have an impact on the survival of the nation because children are the golden generation of the nation. One of the ways that can be done to reduce malnutrition cases is monitoring the prevalence of undernutrition and overnutrition among children through measuring body mass index for age (BMI-for-age). The higher the prevalence of undernutrition and overnutrition, the higher the risk of disease because of malnutrition. Besides from the monitoring prevalence of undernutrition and overnutrition among children, improving eating pattern of children can be done to reduce malnutrition cases. Dietary improvements need to be done at schools because children spend around 30% of their time at school so school needs to be aware about the eating pattern of children. It can be tracked from the school awareness level of school feeding program. School feeding program is a policy to regulate the food delivery system consumed by students at school. School feeding program is an alternative to help physical growth and improve cognitive abilities to improve the quality of human resources. This research aims to describe awareness level of public primary schools toward school feeding program, describing prevalence of undernutrition and overnutrition among public primary school students, analyzing whether there is a difference in the proportion of undernutrition and overnutrition among public primary school students based on school awareness level of school feeding program, and analyzing whether there is a difference in the proportion of undernutrition and overnutrition among public primary school students based on gender. This research was conducted at public primary schools in Klojen District, Malang City. The sampling method used was non-probability sampling which was census sampling because of using all public primary schools in Klojen District. The criteria for the students are between 11-13 years old. The analytical methods used in this study were descriptive quantitative analysis and z-test. Descriptive quantitative analysis was used to describe the awareness level of public primary schools in Klojen District and the prevalence of overnutrition and overnutrition among primary school students. While z-test was used to determine whether there was a difference in the proportion of undernutrition and overnutrition based on school awareness level of school feeding program and the gender of students.
