Abstract

Secara Internasional, spesies penyu terdaftar dalam Convention International Trade in Endanger of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), masuk dalam kategori Appendix I yang berarti perdagangan internasional dilarang.

English Abstract

Sea turtles are reptile animals that play a role in protecting marine ecosystems. The existence of sea turtle populations around the world and in Indonesia is increasingly threatened. Internationally, turtle species are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangering Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), included in the category of Appendix I, which means international trade is prohibited. The coastal area of Malang Regency in the south is bordered by the Indian Ocean, which is a turtle migration area. Data from the Bajulmati Sea Turtle Conservation (BSTC) program for 2023 shows that Bajulmati Beach and Nganteb Beach are the places where Lekang turtles lay their eggs. Based on this, a study was carried out to determine the characteristics of the beach and to compare the characteristics of the nesting habitat for the Lekang turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) at Bajulmati Beach and Nganteb Beach, Malang Regency. The research was conducted in March–May 2023 at Bajulmati Beach and Nganteb Beach. The method used is the survey method with a descriptive explanation. Stations were determined using the purposive random sampling method into six stations, including three stations on Bajulmati Beach and three stations on Nganteb Beach. Parameters measured included the length and width of the beach, the slope of the beach, the texture of the beach sand, the temperature of the nest, the humidity of the nest, and vegetation. Furthermore, a comparative descriptive analysis was carried out with statistical tests to determine the comparison of habitat characteristics at Bajulmati Beach and Nganteb Beach. The length of Bajulmati Beach is 572 meters, it is 64 meters wide, and the average slope is 10% (tilted). Medium sand grains are 20.107% and 77.992% fine sand, while the average temperature and humidity of the nests are 30.2 oC and 0%, respectively. The dominant vegetation on Bajulmati Beach is sea pine (Casuarina equisetifolia) and sea pandanus (Pandanus odorifer). Nganteb Beach has a beach length of 628 meters, a beach width of 62.7 meters, and an average slope of 7.3% (sloping). Fine sand grains are 95.702%, while the average temperature and humidity of the nests are 29.5 oC and 0%, respectively. The dominant vegetation on Nganteb Beach is sea pandanus (Pandanus odorifer) and sea waru (Thespesia populnea). Nganteb Beach is closer to settlements than Bajulmati Beach. Based on statistical tests, the parameters of temperature and vegetation at Waru Laut on the two coasts are different. The values of the slope parameter, Ketapang vegetation, and Nyamplung vegetation on the two beaches are different. There is no significant difference in the vegetation of Pandan Laut, Cemara Laut, and Keben on both coasts. Suggestions for this study include the need for further research regarding the analysis of the characteristics of turtle nesting habitat against other parameters as factors that influence turtle nesting. Areas that are turtle nesting habitats need to be conserved to maintain their sustainability.
