Abstract

English Abstract

The Porong River is one of the major rivers in the Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. The condition of the Porong River enters the waters that have decreased water quality caused by microplastic contamination. Microplastics can be found on the surface of the water and on the bottom or in sediments. Its existence at the bottom of the sediment is influenced by the gravitational force of the plastic density being higher than the density of water. Several studies have proven that there are several bacteria that have the ability to degrade microplastic polymers, including Azotobacter, Bacillus megaterium, Pseudomonas sp., Ralstonia eutropha, Halomonas sp, etc. Therefore it is necessary to conduct research on bacteria, both types and abundance, microplastics, and water quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of microplastics and bacteria found in the Porong River, the bacteria were analyzed whether they could degrade the microplastics contained in water and sediment. In addition, water quality analysis was also carried out as supporting parameters, namely physical parameters (temperature and TDS) and chemical parameters (DO, CO2, TOM, and pH). Where the data was taken five times. This research was conducted in December 2022 – February 2023. The data collection method in this study was carried out in 2 ways, namely quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative data were obtained from field and laboratory data conducted by researchers, while qualitative data were obtained from observation, interviews, active participation, documentation and from verified and reliable literature studies. The conclusion of the research results based on the data obtained on the measurement of water quality parameters obtained temperature values ranging from 19.2–290C, TDS levels ranging from 88.3–652.1 mg/L, pH values ranging from 6.7–7.2, DO concentrations ranging 4.5–7.3 mg/L, CO2 concentrations ranged from 10.6–20.3 mg/L, and TOM levels ranged from 5.83–12.82 mg/L. The average abundance of microplastics in water ranges from 3867–11200 particles/m3. The average abundance of microplastics in sediment ranges from 578–1600 particles/Kg. The average total abundance of bacteria ranged from 1.8 x 103 – 1.4 x 106. The types of bacteria found were as many as 12 types of bacteria including Pseudomonas pseudomallei, Pseudomonas putida, Pantoea agglomerans, Klebsiella oxitoka, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella ozaenae, Escherichia coli, Streptomyces spp, Cronobacter sakazakii, Yersenia enterolitica, Providencia stuartii, and Acinetobacter iwoffii. The advice given is that it is necessary to carry out further research so that more detailed data on microplastic degrading bacteria can be obtained and it is necessary to preserve the river environment so that the pollution level of the Porong River can be reduced.ozaenae, Escherichia coli, Streptomyces spp, Cronobacter sakazakii, Yersenia enterolitica, Providencia stuartii, and Acinetobacter iwoffii.
