Abstract

Puisi adalah sebuah bagian dari sastra yang menggambarkan tentang sebuah adegan dalam satu cara yang padat dan tidak semua orang mampu untuk memahaminya. Puisi membantu kita untuk melihat macam-macam arti, nilai moral, dan perasaan yang penulis gambarkan dalam kepadatan kata-kata dimana kita perlu memahaminya terlebih dahulu untuk memaknai nilai-nilai didalamnya. Beberapa puisi, dengan beberapa judul; My Tongue is Divided into Two oleh Quique Aviles, Let America be America Again oleh Langston Hughes, Grandfather oleh Andrei Guruianu, dan Swear Words oleh Aimee Nezhukumatathi yang menjadi objek dari penelitian ini juga mengandung unsur-unsur penting mengingat para pengarang tersebut merupakan imigran, yaitu mereka yang datang dari luar Amerika Serikat dan tinggal didalamnya menjadikan mereka bahan yang dapat saya teliti tentang konsep diaspora di puisi-puisi generasi pertama dan kedua imigran di Amerika Serikat. Dalam melaksanan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan konsep diaspora sebagai pendekatan study. Fokus dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa perbedaan diantara puisi-puisi generasi pertama dan kedua imigran yang kemudian akan dibagi lagi menjadi dua sub-bab; identitas dan budaya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan beberapa temuan yang berbeda satu sama lain dalam hal identitas dan budaya, pertama, dalam identitas peneliti menemukan perbedaan bahwa generasi pertama masih mempertahankan bahasa dan budaya aslinya sedangkan generasi kedua sudah berbaur sebagai warga negara Amerika. Kedua, dalam budaya peneliti menemukan perbedaan bahwa generasi pertama masih menunjukkan bagaimana tradisi penamaan juga mempengaruhi cara orang mengenali asalnya sedangkan generasi kedua sudah dipengaruhi oleh budaya negara tuan rumah, yaitu mengumpat. Kesimpulan dari skripsi ini adalah puisi-puisi tersebut menunjukkan banyak cara dimana para imigran dari berbagai generasi menggambarkan diri mereka sebagai bagian dari warga negara AS dengan berbagai cara dengan beberapa di antaranya menunjukkan bahwa mereka sudah berasimilasi dengan identitas dan budaya AS sementara yang lain masih mempertahankan identitas dan budaya dari asalnya, baik itu melalui nama maupun penggunaan bahasa.

English Abstract

Poems are a part of literature that describes a scene in a concentrated way that not all people are capable of understanding it. They help us to see a variety of meanings, moral values, and feelings that the authors concentrated in words that we need to understand to find the values of it. Some of the poems, entitled: My Tongue is Divided into Two by Quique Aviles, Let America be America Again by Langston Hughes, Grandfather by Andrei Guruianu, and Swear Words by Aimee Nezhukumatathi which become the object of my research also have such important values as they are immigrants, the ones who came from outside the USA and settled in it. The concept of they settled in the USA not merely because moved in, but because some of them are also born and raised here as the descendant of immigrants, making them the suitable object of my research on the concept of diaspora in the first- and second-generation immigrant's poems in the USA. In doing this research, the researcher used the concept of diaspora as the approach of the study. The focus of this research is to analyze the difference between the first and second-generation immigrants’ poems which are then divided into sub-chapters; identity and culture. The result of this study shows several findings that differ from one each another in terms of identity and term of culture, first, in identity the researcher found the difference that the first generation is still maintaining their original language and culture while the second one is already blended as an American citizen. Second, in culture, the researcher found the differences that the first generation is still showing how a tradition of naming is also affecting the way people recognize their origin while the second generation is already affected by the culture of the host country, which is swearing. The conclusion of this undergraduate thesis is these poems show many ways in which immigrants from different generations portraying themselves as a part of US citizens in various ways with some of them show that they are already assimilating with the US identity and culture while others are still maintaining the identity and culture from their origin whether it is in form of naming and the usage of language.
