Abstract

Kemunculan gender menyebabkan perempuan dalam masyarakat patriarki dipandang dan diperlakukan sebagai objek seks yang membuat laki-laki dapat memanfaatkan perempuan untuk kepentingan mereka sendiri. Kondisi ini ditunjukkan dalam novel Red Sparrow dimana Dominika Egorova terobjektifikasi dan dinilai hanya sebagai objek seks, sehingga membuatnya tereksploitasi secara seksual demi kepentingan SVR. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perspektif dan perlakukan karakter laki-laki terhadap Dominika Egorova yang merupakan faktor dari eksploitasi seksual di tempat kerja. Penelitian ini juga mencoba untuk menyanggah klaim bahwa Dominika adalah Femme Fatale dengan memberikan bukti adanya praktik eksploitasi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan data primer berupa kutipan dan dialog dalam novel. Data akan dianalisis menggunakan teori objektifikasi oleh Fredrickson dan Roberts (1997) dan Nussbaum (1995) dan beberapa informasi mengenai eksploitasi untuk mengetahui bagaimana perlakukan atasan laki-laki dapat menyebabkan eksploitasi. Terdapat tiga temuan utama. Pertama, tempat kerja menerapkan sistem patriarki yang menyebabkan perempuan dianggap tidak kompeten, namun penampilan dan tubuh mereka lebih dihargai oleh laki-laki. Kedua, atasan laki-laki mengobjektifikasi Dominika Egorova dalam bentuk penolakan subjektivitas, instrumentalisasi, dan fungibility, atau mempergunakannya sebagai mata-mata prositute (Sparrow) sehingga membuatnya tereksploitasi secara seksual. Ketiga, Dominika mengalami paksaan dan manipulasi sebagai alat untuk mengontrolnya di SVR. Terakhir, Dominika menunjukkan kebencian saat digunakan sebagai mata-mata pelacur dan menolak akan identitas tersebut yang ditunjukkan dari reaksinya, yaitu kecemasan dan rasa malu, dan kesadarannya jika digunakan dan dieksploitasi oleh pamannya dan SVR dimana usaha yang ia berikan dalam bekerja bukan untuk dirinya sendiri. Oleh karena itu, citra Dominika sebagai Femme Fatale bisa terbukti salah.

English Abstract

Due to the existence of gender, women in male-dominated societies are seen and treated as sex objects leading men to take advantage of them for their own interests. This condition is portrayed in the Red Sparrow novel where Dominika Egorova is objectified and valued merely as a sex object and thus led her to be sexually exploited for the sake of the SVR. This research aims to analyze male characters’ perspective and treatments towards Dominika Egorova which are the factor of sexual exploitation in the workplace. This research attempts to refute the claim ‘Dominika is a Femme Fatale’ by providing the proofs on the practice of exploitation. This research is a qualitative study in which the primary data were in the form of excerpts and dialogue in the novel. The data collected will be analyzed using the objectification theory proposed by Fredrickson and Roberts (1997) and Nussbaum (1995) and some information on exploitation in order to find out how the treatments of the male characters can lead to sexual exploitation. The findings show three main points. First, the workplace implemented patriarchal system which caused women to be seen as incompetence, yet their appearance and body tend to be more valued by men. Second, the male superiors objectified Dominika Egorova in the form of denial of subjectivity, instrumentalization, and fungibility, or using her as a prostitute spy (Sparrow) which leads to her being sexually exploited. Third, Dominika was coerced and manipulated as a way to control her in the SVR. Lastly, Dominika was detested being used as prostitute spy and refuse this identity which is shown through Dominika’s reaction, such as the feeling of anxiety and shame, and that she was aware that she was used and exploit by her uncle and the SVR where her efforts put in the work is not for herself. In light of this, the image of Dominika as a Femme Fatale could be proven wrong.
