Abstract

Arca Bodhisattwa Awalokiteswara dengan nomor inventaris koleksi no.55/kota malang merupakan salah satu arca Buddha yang menjadi koleksi masterpiece di Museum Mpu Purwa, Malang. Arca ini diperkirakan berasal dari masa kerajaan Singhasari dikarenakan visual arca memiliki karakteristik kesenian masa Singhasari. Arca ini merupakan perwujudan dari salah satu dewa dalam pantheon Buddha Mahayana, yakni Bodhisattwa Awalokiteswara atau yang dikenal sebagai Padmapani. Keistimewaan arca ini terletak pada penggambaran Prabhamandala yang kaya akan ragam ornamen. Selain itu, sejauh ini arca tersebut masih menjadi satu-satunya arca Bodhisattwa Awalokiteswara yang ada di Jawa Timur. Penelitian ini mengkaji ragam ornamentasi beserta pemaknaannya yang terdapat pada arca melalui pendekatan ikonografi untuk mendeskripsikan, mengidentifikasi, serta menginterpretasikan makna dan nilai arca. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu deskriptif analitis. Pengumpulan data diperoleh melalui teknik observasi, wawancara, studi pustaka, dan dokumentasi. Hasil dari penelitian diketahui bahwa Arca Bodhisattwa Awalokiteswara Museum Mpu Purwa memiliki ragam ornamentasi yang terletak pada busana arca maupun bagian prabhamandala serta sirascakra. Motif terdiri dari motif flora, fauna, geometri, dan kosmos. Keindahan ornamentasi pada arca Bodhisattwa Awalokiteswara terpusat kepada keindahan bentuk sebagai pemaknaan simbol-simbol spiritualitas ajaran Buddha. Arca Bodhisattwa Awalokiteswara memiliki penggambaran berbeda dari arca sejenis yang dipengaruhi kesenian Pala.

English Abstract

The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue with collection inventory number no. 55/kota malang is one of the Buddha statues which is a masterpiece collection at the Mpu Purwa Museum, Malang. This statue is thought to have come from the Singhasari kingdom period because the visuals of the statue have the artistic characteristics of the Singhasari period. This statue is the embodiment of one of the gods in the Mahayana Buddhist pantheon, namely Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara or known as Padmapani. The speciality of this statue lies in the depiction of Prabhamandala which is rich in various ornaments. Apart from that, so far this statue is still the only statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in East Java. This study examines the various ornamentations and their meanings contained in the statues through an iconographic approach to describe, identify, and interpret the meanings and values of the statues. The method used in this research is analytical descriptive. Data collection was obtained through observation techniques, interviews, literature studies, and documentation. The results of the study show that Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue Museum Mpu Purwa collection’s has a variety of ornamentations located on the statue's clothing as well as the prabhamandala and sirascakra parts. The motifs consist of flora, fauna, geometry and cosmos motifs. The beauty of the ornamentation on the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue is centered on the beauty of the form as the meaning of the symbols of the spirituality of Buddhism. The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara statue has a different depiction from similar statues which are influenced by Pala art.
