Abstract
English Abstract
In this study, biodegradable composites were investigated for cable ties applications in seawater environments. In seawater environments, cable ties are often used in coral reef cultivation applications. The material used is Polycaprolactone (PCL) because it has biodegradable properties and hydrophobicity which can be increased according to the application. The properties of PCL can be improved or enhanced by mixing a filler in the form of Graphite, because of graphite its hydrophobic character. Composites were made by mixing matrix Polycaprolactone (PCL) with graphite powder fillers (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% by weight percentage). The mixing process is carried out by the melt blending method using an extrusion machine, and the specimens are made by an injection molding machine. The extrusion process is carried out at 70oC, and for injection molding at 150oC. Specimens were characterized by testing for water absorption, hydrophobicity, FTIR, and morphological observations using a scanning electron microscope - energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Identification of functional groups of PCL-Graphite compounds with FTIR, showed no significant changes in PCL functional groups. The water absorption test showed that the addition of fillers reduced the percentage value of water absorption and increased the hydrophobicity of the material. Also shown in the hydrophobicity test where the angle formed is also enlarged. Confirmed by SEM observations which show that the graphite filler is evenly distributed and fills the gaps in the PCL matrix.
