Abstract
English Abstract
Fanaticism is defined by Mead (1977: 35) as a feeling that emerge from continuous possibility where there is choice. The term itself originates from religious sphere, before being spread to secular culture, as civilization evolve. Sports like football, which have principles of high level competition, become a great medium where fanaticism expressed in modern era. This was marked by the emergence of hooligan culture in United Kingdom in the 1960s, where group of teenagers and young adults with the attributes of their favorite local club often made troubles to show superiority towards other club’s fans. (Kutomanov et al., 2019:3). The massive broadcasting of Europe’s football leagues on world television since the 1990s has made fanatical support for certain clubs become transnational, developed without the need for close proximity. That’s what happened to the rapid growth of supporters of English Premier League (EPL) club, Manchester United. EPL, which has never been absent from television broadcast since it’s debut season, makes club like United becomes familiar in Indonesia’s football fans. United, as the most successful club in EPL which also full of philosophy, attracts Indonesian football fans who are tired of the stagnant quality of the local league. This research is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach that uses in-depth interviews and observation of members of 3 United supporting communities: United Indonesia, Indonesian Manchester United, and United Army Indonesia to collect data. The results of the study show that the fanaticism of United fans in Indonesia towards their club is able to make them willing to sacrifice time, energy, and even money, to validate their status in real life.
