Abstract

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Arnold Spirit Jr, karya Sherman Alexie tahun 2007.

English Abstract

This study focuses on uncovering the manifestation of ethnic pride from the main character from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Arnold Spirit Jr, by Sherman Alexie in 2007. This research was done by applying sociological approach towards the novel. The data was taken from the novel and some pieces of cartoons inside it. It is then categorized into one of the seven key items based from Tracy, J. L., & Robins, R. W. (2007) scale to comprise adjective and phrases that reflects authentic pride. The researcher divided the key items into three classes which consist of (a) accomplished, successful and achieved, (b) self- worth, and (c) confident, productive, and fulfilled. Brook, Whiteman, Balka, Win & Gursen’s ethnic identification and affiliation, alongside with Leong’s understanding of ethnic pride are also used to identify the manifestation of Junior’s ethnic pride. In the end, it is shown that although various actions of Junior makes it seem like he leans towards the white community, Junior shows that he still affiliates himself with his own tribe in his own way, such as his thought process and feelings. The research is limited towards the novel itself without the authorship, as the main objective is to study the main character of the novel, another limitation is that phrases such as arrogant or ethnocentric are not considered as an ethnic pride, hence, although the scale made by Tracy, J. L., & Robins, R. W has two sides, hubristic pride will not be considered, and is limited to authentic pride only. It is suggested that the next researcher who intends to analyze the same topic to consider implementing authorship to the discussion. In addition, the next researcher may use a different approach.
